I have my options set such that newer posts are at the top of the page, so when I'm replying I'm usually at the top of the page or quoting someone else rather than at the bottom of the page where the quick reply is.

I frequently do. Unless I'm quoting somebody, or writing an in-depth response where I'll be AFK looking stuff up or something, I generally use it.

I only use when I'm not going to embed anything (smilies or otherwise)

Of course that does not include the normal smilies that are easy to remember: :) :( ;) :P :p :/

I like the text smilies too because it makes this look more like an IRC rather than a forum

I never use it, for the same reasons as already mentioned by aFrenchie and RMJ. I can't remember all the smileys and I almost always use the preview feature, also for short messages ;)

^ Same here. I only "Go Advanced" when I need an option that isn't in the Quick Reply. Otherwise, QR is much easier.
