Interesting. Without the benfit of understanding French, to me, this looks a lot like an historically-based action/revenge/drama similar to something Mel Gibson would do.... Braveheart springs instantly to mind.

I didn't know Laurent was into films, let alone directing them. I thought he was just a pop musician/composer. We're sure this is the same Laurent Boutonnat?

I never heard about this project by L.Boutonnat but "Jacquou le Croquant" is a very well known TV series created back in 1969 and that was excellent:
- Wiki (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacquou_le_croquant_%28t%C3%A9l%C3%A9vision%29)
- Amazon.fr (http://www.amazon.fr/Jacquou-croquant-M%C3%A9tayers-Tuili%C3%A8re-R%C3%A9volte/dp/B00004VYW2)
He'd better save the same reputation on that title! He'll be surely severely judged if he ever failed on that old masterpiece's remake!

Hell yeah it's the same Laurent! Film is his first passion. In fact, pretty much all he did with Mylene in the early days was to lead up to and earn money for his life-long dream project, Giorgino. Getting to finally make that film with Mylene in the early 90s, and it's subsequent critical and commercial failure, is pretty much the turning point in both their careers.

Anyway, this new film looks nice... though the critics are responding to it much the same as his last one: beautiful to look at, but over-long, over-boring, and over-indulgent. Though then again, I loved Giorgino, so who knows. And there's a Mylene song on the new Laurent-composed soundtrack, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned! :)

EDIT: Amelie was just talking about said song here:

That's interesting. As I can only understand about 10% of the French words in the trailer, my first impressions were great cinematography and great score. The two parts I can actually judge myself are the two parts the critics think are good.

One reason I follow Laurent is I like his composing. After all, the success of Alizée goes well beyond her voice and performance. The songs she sings are composed very nicely. And that credit goes to Laurent.

Indeed, Laurent is an awesome composer! And filmmaker and just all around creative person. In some ways, I think I'm primarily a fan of him. Alizée's great on her own merits, but it was the music that first attracted me, and it was a Laurent directed video I saw next (Moi... Lolita). I could take or leave Mylene as a performer, but just love all of Laurent's compositions, and then his music videos for her got me really interested. His stuff for Nathalie Cardone is fantastic as well. And his film soundtracks are simply majestic. I'm definitely gonna miss Laurent on Alizée's third disc!

Artistic: Probably. I expect the third album to be very good. Maybe not as good (or as suited to my tastes) as the first two, though fully satisfying to us fans nonetheless.

Commercial: I don't know, it could go either way. I'm very concerned, and frankly a run-away success would surprise me. A modest success along the lines of the second album is most likely, though a colossal failure is also possible. Though that's due to many more factors than just Laurent leaving...

DAMMIT!!!!

This movie doesn't come out until 17 January. That means that it won't be out on DVD for some time! Shit! It looks great and I want to purchase it and watch it now. I hope it comes with English subtitles. If not I'll stumble through somehow.

Thanks for informing us about this great movie; I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Is anyone aware if there is movie theaters in Paris that would show movies avec English subtitles ?

I could go see the movie while in Paris then. :)

Some of our theaters has subtitles for foreing people so they can go to see movies when living here... so I could imagine there's such things in Paris, too.

yeah, i am waiting for this film too, you know, somehow, i loved Giorgino and, even this film is without Mylene's face, i believe it's very good...i still think, that Laurent is very good in this...stuff...
and if we are talking about Alizee again, i have an idea, maybe after third album, with fourth album she might will work with M. and L. again? it would be soooo fantastic!!!

Do you think she will have success without Laurent?

Well, we'll just have to see.

In showbiz there is a tendency to over emphasize the performer and under emphasize composition, presentation, and lyrics. Alizée's success grew from a collective contribution (think in terms of three legged stool) from Alizée, Laurent, and Mylène.

The question of success hinges on how well the two legs are replaced. There are most certainly other talented composers, writers, and production experts. Some artists fill in those two legs with their own talent for lyrics, composition, and presentation.

There is also the success as determined by each of us individually, as well as collective success. It is possible for Alizée to produce songs you greatly love, but only few share your view. That would be success for you, but not necessarily for Alizée. Conversely, she may have great success amongst the masses, but the songs may be lacking as far as you, individually, are concerned. You will take comfort in Alizée's great success, but might not particularly like the songs. And, of course, the home run would be if you like the songs and Alizée hits the charts.

The voice will be the same, or close. The presentation, composition, and lyrics will be different. We'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Received the Jacquou soundtrack yesterday. Beautiful (though at times overly incidental) music. Will be great in the film. Here are some samples:

here is a translation of the story written on the movie's official website:

1815. Jacquou, a young peasant from Périgord, lived happily with his parents. Due to the mistake of a cruel and arrogant nobleman, the Count of Nansac, he became a miserable orphan.

Sworn to revenge, Jacquou will grow up and bloom under the protection of the good priest Bonal who takes him in. Thanks to good friends and to Lina, a patient and shining young girl, he will become a determined and seductive young man in a few years. He will know to transform his desire for vengeance into a fight against injustice, and prove that a simple peasant is not stripped of glory.

oh and aditya, there seems to be plenty of fighting in that movie ;)

On theaters on Champs-Élysée the ads for it was one of the tiniest...

This one is from Latin quarters or from St-Germain area. Dun remember for sure.
