I've been learning French, and became an Alizée fan as I sought out French music. The videos on this site are fantastic, especially the interviews with subtitles. Merci Brad!

I'm rather saddened by Alizée's apparent split with Mylène Farmer, who is quite talented in her own right. Because of their close collaboration, it's difficult to tell where Mylène ends and Alizée begins musically.

I'm sure that most of you who are also Mylène fans have heard her new single with Moby - Slipping Away - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tGPQtyIC50 It's really one of the best songs I've heard in a while, and the video is very clever.

Anyway, I'm bringing this up here on Alizée America because it seems to me exactly the type of move that could popularize Alizée here in America, if she ever changes her opinion about that prospect. The mixture of French and English in the song is very well done, and the popularity of someone like Moby would get people listening.

Welcome to the site dan:)

We'll have to wait and see how this does, I know she did a duo with Seal, Les mots, before but I don't think it helped her break into the American market any. Maybe the Moby one will be different, some French Mylène Farmer fans that I've talked on other Alizée sites have been so so about it, maybe Moby fans will like it better. I still prefer Désenchantée myself though. Both videos are on YouTube.

Thanks everyone for the welcome :)

Twitch: I also like Désenchantée, although I find Les Mots uninteresting. I can see how some fans of Mylène wouldn't like Slipping Away, since Moby's style is so predominant in the song. Anyway, I just discovered that Slipping Away debuted #1 in France, something that hasn't happened for Mylène since 1995. Perhaps that bodes well for success elsewhere? I don't normally track such things, so I'm not one to make predictions.

Slipping Away is a good song, I bought the single when I was in Paris. I'm not usually a Moby fan but it was a nice collaboration with Mylene.

oh i am them both fan (of course, much more Mylene's fan). Slipping away is very beautiful song and it was in my mind in very hard while to me "...Seeing the sun, when it's all going bad..." these words was helping me to keep one’s end up, now everything is going better and easier...

Kate Ryan sang Désenchantée not too long ago, but not in English. I don't know if there are English versions of Désenchantée and Libertine. You could ask Amelie, she knows more about Mylène than me :)

OUAISSSS viva Mylèna - this clip is fantastic! I am still moved right now, even though I saw that clip a bazillion times. That song really speaks to our own doubts, our desires, our fears... it strikes a chord with many.

A translation is available, courtesy of backinblack from www.mf-international.com.

1
00:00:40,499 --> 00:00:43,734
Harshness of sounds

2
00:00:43,735 --> 00:00:48,081
Torment of winds

3
00:00:48,706 --> 00:00:52,743
Memory...

4
00:00:53,453 --> 00:00:58,467
That forgets me, flees me

5
00:00:58,468 --> 00:01:02,778
Jesus! I'm afraid

6
00:01:03,345 --> 00:01:05,301
Jesus! of the hour...

7
00:01:05,302 --> 00:01:09,189
That brings me back

8
00:01:10,571 --> 00:01:12,928
To dreams carried away,

9
00:01:12,929 --> 00:01:14,993
To worlds forgotten, oh

10
00:01:16,381 --> 00:01:19,864
Jesus! I'm afraid

11
00:01:20,536 --> 00:01:22,520
Of the pain...

12
00:01:22,521 --> 00:01:26,649
Of night-long vigils

13
00:01:27,935 --> 00:01:29,937
Memory unfinished,

14
00:01:29,938 --> 00:01:34,219
That doesn't know...
from where it springs

15
00:01:34,220 --> 00:01:38,566
Before the shadow, I know,

16
00:01:38,567 --> 00:01:42,957
Falls to my feet

17
00:01:42,958 --> 00:01:46,747
To see the other side

18
00:01:46,748 --> 00:01:51,706
I know that...
I know that.. I loved

19
00:01:51,707 --> 00:01:55,965
Before the shadow...
constrained

20
00:01:55,966 --> 00:02:00,297
Falls to my feet

21
00:02:00,298 --> 00:02:04,668
To see the other side

22
00:02:04,669 --> 00:02:08,217
I know that I love,
I know that I've...

23
00:02:08,835 --> 00:02:11,960
Jesus! I'm afraid

24
00:02:11,961 --> 00:02:14,942
Oh! Jesus! Lord!

25
00:02:14,943 --> 00:02:18,973
Am I guilty?

26
00:02:18,974 --> 00:02:22,306
I who believed my soul

27
00:02:22,307 --> 00:02:25,595
An impenetrable sanctuary

28
00:02:26,149 --> 00:02:29,479
Jesus! I'm afraid

29
00:02:29,480 --> 00:02:32,659
Jesus! I'm dying

30
00:02:32,660 --> 00:02:36,264
To burn the imprint

31
00:02:37,608 --> 00:02:45,143
But let the past
become the past again

32
00:02:47,255 --> 00:02:49,149
Past...

33
00:02:51,124 --> 00:02:54,067
Past...

34
00:02:55,902 --> 00:02:57,684
Past...

35
00:03:00,213 --> 00:03:02,405
Past...

36
00:03:04,694 --> 00:03:06,894
Past...

37
00:03:08,862 --> 00:03:12,188
Past...

38
00:03:13,432 --> 00:03:15,826
Past...

39
00:03:19,121 --> 00:03:20,933
Before the shadow...

40
00:03:21,358 --> 00:03:22,616
I know...

41
00:03:22,617 --> 00:03:27,681
Falls to my feet

42
00:03:27,682 --> 00:03:31,931
To see the other side

43
00:03:31,932 --> 00:03:36,224
I know that, I know that,
I've loved

44
00:03:36,225 --> 00:03:38,534
Before the shadow...

45
00:03:38,535 --> 00:03:40,582
I've loved

46
00:03:40,583 --> 00:03:45,072

I'm fan of Mylène too, I consider her the second best singer and performer after Alizée. I haven't been at the concert but I bought the DVD as soon as it was released in december last year. I agree her entrance is overwhelming and it's great to see the expression on the faces of her fans, some of them look really hypnotized. I also have her Live à Bercy and Mylenium Tour DVDs but Avant que l'Ombre is my favorite too.

Wow. That entrance in just plain wow.

You have to be confidant in your god(ess) status to pull that off, and Mylène certainly seems to be well enthroned.

That DVD out yet? I watched it full screen, but I'd love to see it on a widescreen HD TV. I'd buy the disk just for that entrance :-P

Yeah, the DVD was released 4th of December.

And no, it's not HD material so any widescreen will do. Just make sure it's CRT, because the show has lots of dark colors.

It's still amazing DVD, tho.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I appreciate it.

The 2-CD Les Mots is sort of out of my price range at the moment. They do have the single CD Les Mots (http://www.amazon.com/Mots-Best-Mylene-Farmer/dp/B000063TDX/sr=8-29/qid=1169938276/ref=sr_1_29/002-3590010-6135242?ie=UTF8&s=music), and Anamorphosee looks promising too. Though, it's probably worth it if I just wait and save up for the 2-CD Les Mots.

Thanks again!

I have to admit, that Avant que l'ombreis rather impressive. But before I can really throw my support behind Mylène Farmer I'd like to know more about the Mylène/Laurent adn Alizée split. The way I see it there are three main options about what happened:

A) Alizée (possibly with Jérémy) decide that it would be best to seperate from the Mylène/Laurent team so that she can develop her own style and identity and break off the relationship.

B) Alizée and Mylène decide together to seperate for much of the same reasons in A.

C) Myléne/Laurent, disapointed with MCE and Tour performance and perhaps disaproving of Alizée early marrigage, decide that their ability to make money off of Alizée's Lolita image is exhausted and pull support for Alizée's career.

If A or B, I don't really have a problem with Mylène at all since Alizée would have had adequate say in the decision-making process and in deciding the direction of her future career. But if C, then I have a major problem with Mylène, particularly since it was clear that early on Mylène fostered a relationship with the still very young Alizée with the impression that Mylène would always be there for Alizée. With C, Mylène is more concerned with money and/or control over Alizée's image/marketing/career.

It's a though call with so little information. Any thoughts?

Quite possibly a combination. As in...
1. Alizée wanted a more mature sound on MCE, which she was given.
2. MCE didn't do as well as Gourmandises.
3. MF/LB might have wanted to go back to more of a teen pop sound for album #3, which Alizée probably did not want to do (given that she is now 23, married, and a mother).
4. Thus, the split would have been mutual, even though Alizée wanted it for your A and MF/LB did for your C.

Then how would you feel?

[Disclaimer: in case it wasn't clear, #3 is pure speculation]

I guess the main issue for me is that Mylène didn't just drop Alizée because her and Laurent didn't manage MCE well enough to their liking after leading on a young Alizée to believe that the team would essentially be together for the long haul. It's clear that Alizée saw Mylène as a sister/mother/friend figure and if she then dropped her for finiancial or "political" reasons within the industry that would just piss me off and lead me to hold Mylène in lower regard. If the split was mutual than I completely support Alizée's right to make her own decidions about her career and wouldn't hold any animosity toward Mylène at all. Whether the split is to the ultimate benefit or detriment of Alizée's career in that case... c'est la vie.

You seem to assume that if it wasn't mutual, then it was something mean Mylene did. For all we know it could have been Alizée who, unhappy with her sales, unceremoniously dropped her. Given that neither them nor any reliable source around them has ever once commented on the situation at all, it's really fruitless speculation. I don't think we'll ever know. So I don't hold it against either of them, and I judge them individually. Always have, always will.

Nah, A in my original post was there to cover Alizée dropping Mylène. The three original options I layed out can be summarized:
A) Alizée drops Mylène IMO::rolleyes:
B) Mutual seperation IMO::)
C) Mylène drops Alizée IMO::mad:
So I tried to cover all the bases in the most general sense. But as you said, we don't have enough information. I think we might eventually know; just that it might be one of those things that comes out maybe 20-30 years down the road.

I know, but it's quite a double-standard! It's fine for Alizée to drop Mylene, a smile even, but Mylene dropping her is terrible? Yes Mylene is the older established mentor, but then to simply leave her, possibly even breaking their contract, when circumstances change? That would certainly be ungrateful, Mylene didn't launch Alizée's career out of charity! I think it would be equally unfortunate to learn that it wasn't mutual in either way. In one case, Mylene isn't all she's cracked up to be, in the other.... Alizée isn't. :(

Of course there's probably more to it than that. If Alizée did drop Mylene, I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision and was done for many (good) reasons. But then the same thing could probably be said for Mylene if the situation was reversed. There are just too many variables we don't know to make any sort of judgments in this situation. And yeah, I don't think we'll know anytime soon. Maybe in 20-30 years like you say, but by then Mylene will surely be retired anyway. :)

EDIT: If you want my guess, based on nothing more than intuition, I'd say things probably worked out mutual in the end... not that there might not have been some heated debate from both sides before that was reached!

Your probably right about it being a bit of a double standard on my part. I'm just naturally inclined to side with Alizée. :p

I don't think Alizée had the option of dropping MF. Alizée was under contract...Polydor (whether or not that included MF/LB) had all the power in that relationship.

I’m assuming Alizée had a recording contract with the record company as well as any legal arrangements she had with Mylene. This would add another layer of complexity to the situation. Maybe the record company had a third option left for another CD which they chose not to exercise. Maybe Alizée’s marriage and pregnancy caused time to run out on the contract. This might have upset a few people.

Maybe Mylene thought that she had done all she could for Alizée and it was now time for her to fly on her own. Maybe Alizée also wanted to start steering her own course. I know, a lot of maybes. Without further information, I’m going to assume that their separation was mutual.

I just hope that Alizée’s new CD puts her back on top. These long breaks between albums must cause her to loose a lot of momentum. She can make new fans, but how many old ones does she loose? If her CD does not sell well in Europe, she may have to reconsider North America. Hopefully, she has some English versions of her new songs just in case.

I’m wondering if our members living in Europe have any sense of how much the general public there is looking forward to Alizée’s return. Since we all spend so much time immersed in Alizée, it may be difficult for us to be objective. I sure would like opinions on this.

Snatcher and I have discussed this privately recently (for those who don't know, Snatcher recently returned from living in Paris). Not the most uplifting discussion I've had recently... but I'll let him share if he likes. Basically it comes down to how well her album/she's marketed when the time comes and how willing the French people are to accept a more mature Alizée for a more mature audience rather than a Lolita image marketed to teens. In my opinion, if the 3rd album ultimately fails it will be the fault of a French public that is unwilling to accept Alizée for herself rather than Lolita... that's assuming as well that the 3rd album is quality material as contributed by its writers/producers.

Good point. Universal's position is a further factor. There's just so much we don't know.

Likewise.

Yeah... I mean, the primary thing now is just that people have long since forgotten about Alizée, and don't really care one way or another about her return. Overcoming the public's Lolita image of her is one thing, and will be important eventually, but she just has to break their apathy first.

we should ask Alizee why she doesn't work with MF anymore, when she'll comeback-maybe in one interview we'll finally know the reason "why"

you all know what it's like to fall head over heels for our dear Tinkerbell and then know that you probably won't meet her in a lifetime - that feeling is absolutely horrible.

Well, I just found out that Mymy has a music video about exactly this subject - impossible love! Wow, it hit my mark exactly. I was a wreck after I listened to this music video :( :( . At least she sympathizes with me :wub:

JCC posted the live video, though, and I think Garcon uploaded the music video with Jean-Louis Murat (though I didn't download to check).

Edit: here we go...

Also, dunno about you Garcon, but I intend to meet Alizée eventually. Even if it's only for a moment after a concert or something... :)
