Well, she does have a mystical presence in her eyes. i must admit i did not even know albout Alizee until very recently when i heard j'en au marrie and liked the sound of it. Then when i watched the video, my eyes lit up. It's amazing how you can understand someone completely without knowing a word they're saying. (Actually i know 'mon poisson rouge'. It means My goldfish! not quite sure why she's saying that but nevermind.)

It's definitely rouge. Actually I finally figured out the underlying meaning intended by Mylène's twisted little mind.
Hmm. Now, how do I say this without getting my post deleted?
All right, try this. Take the words "poisson rouge" and translate them literally. Take the olfactory quality of the first, and combine it with the color of the second.
If that's not clear enough, reflect on the fact that it would have been clearer if the words had been "huître rouge," except that would have made no sense and also been too blatant even for Mylène.

According to the lyrics printed in the MCE CD booklet, its "bouge". When I listen to the studio recording I hear "bouge". I know what you're saying Deepwaters, I think Mylene made the poisson on Alizée's costume rouge to create the play on words, thus implying what I believe you implied in your post.

We had this discussion before. Watch any of the vids of a TV performance of JEAM, and you will see that when she sings that line, her lips are slightly parted, forming an "r" sound, not closed to form a "b." The word "bouge" is almost certainly a misprint.

The word "bouge" is almost certainly a misprint.
On second thought, it's also possible that Alizée deliberately sang/synched the word "rouge" to bring out the double meaning. Naughty girl!

Of course! It's part of learning.
Anyway I got kind of excited on figuring out that "poisson rouge" business, because RMJ had earlier suggested the lyrics involved using a live carp as a sex toy, which is utterly gross. I like this much better.

Maybe it was the language barrier. It was in the context of a discussion of the English version of the song, which I don't like. You talked about the phrases (however clumsy) being appropriate to the theme of the song, which (you implied) involved employing the attentions of a goldfish for erotic purposes. Or at any rate that's what I understood from what you said.
Did you mean something else? If so, then I apologize.
Seriously, though -- Alizée's long clever fingers under the bubbles, fine; a live fish -- BLECH!!

It's bouge. It's bouge in official lyrics. It's bouge on her MCE album. It's bouge in every TV performance. And it's bouge when she sings it in concert. It's bouge everytime.
No official video has lyrics "printed underneath". If one has it's done by someone else and that someone else has written wrong word.

And the song has clear masturbation sub meaning in it. It doesn't matter if you like it or not, it's there. It's been agreed by my most of the fans who has ever bothered to read the lyrics.

This, at least, is NOT true. Granted she's lip-synching in those performances, but her lips are very clearly forming an "r" sound, not a "b" at that point.
The only place I know of where it's clearly "bouge" is in the printed lyrics accompanying the MCE album.

I don't have a problem with English. My assumption is that the confusion arose because it isn't your native language. Hence, your language barrier, not mine.
If we find a forum in Finnish, though, I won't be able to follow what you say at all. ;) And I believe your English is better than your French, right?
In any case, obviously I misunderstood what you wrote, so please accept my apology for the confusion.

That was never our disagreement. As long as the masturbation doesn't involve use of live fish, I'm cool. :)
Actually, RMJ, consider that "poisson rouge" fits much better with that non-piscine-assisted masturbation idea that "poisson bouge," because "poisson rouge" can mean female genitalia, while "poisson bouge" can't.

So what exactly is being accomplished by this argument? If one side wins, it proves that her lyrics contain sensual references. And if the other side wins, it proves her lyrics contain sensual references?
Good grief, I thought that it was already obvious? The only thing that this argument will accomplish is making one side or another (Or possibly even both) rather annoyed with each other. It really doesn't matter what she says does it? I find it enjoyable to listen to anyway. :o
EDIT: Hah, Espire, we were both thinking the same thing...
"poisson rouge" fits much better with that non-piscine-assisted masturbation idea that "poisson bouge," because "poisson rouge" can mean female genitalia, while "poisson bouge" can't.
So it's bouge in the printed lyrics (for kids) and it's rouge in the mind of adult males?

So Alizée's fish is plowing through her "trench" now, is it? :D

Case solved. It's always bouge.
It was the Alizée in English thread.
Well, good you find it. Did you read it ?
Because I don't care where it was... since I know what I have said.
Actually, RMJ, consider that "poisson rouge" fits much better with that non-piscine-assisted masturbation idea that "poisson bouge," because "poisson rouge" can mean female genitalia, while "poisson bouge" can't.
Do you understand what "bouge" means ? It's almost direct sexual connotation in his case. It describes the sexual tension going on.
The mental image of poisson rouge is just addition made by the visual image. Very clever double meaning for the word.
And what comes to poisson rouge as synonym for female genitalia, it's pretty much wrong since it's any fish that is used for it in few references during history. They rarely specified to be goldfish. And in fact, even in this text it's called simply "fish"... "my fish stirs"...
What is shown on video is whole another case since it's needs to be done to please eye. Altho, quite surely Mylène had the goldfish in her mind since he beginning.
I dont think Mylene was actually trying to say the masturbation was with a fish.
Yes, she wasn't. She clearly uses the fish only symbolic object as synonym for the actual thing.

RMJ, don't you realize? We've decided that even though she doesn't say it and it's not written in the lyrics, the song goes "mon poisson fouge."
It solves this problem of the two sides disagreeing.

RMJ, you obviously need a lesson in the ettiquette of graceful acceptance of apologies. I already said I misunderstood you and apologized for doing so. The proper response is "OK, no biggie," or words to that effect. Take a deep breath and try again, will you?
Once again, that aside, we're heading into an argument over stuff neither of us cares much about. I could argue a number of the points you made here, but once again, someone needs to cool things, and again I seem to be self-elected.

Well . . . it wasn't quite a smackdown, because:
1) The clip from the TV performance looked to me like her lips were open, saying "r," and
2) As far as I've discovered there is no sexual connotation in common French usage around the word "bouge," although since sex involves movement you could certainly invent one; and
3) The color of the "poisson rouge" is important in completing the naughty symbolism. (Surely there's no need to spell that out? OK? OK.)
However, I will not respond to anything he says in response to the above, for reasons already stated. So if you want to regard that as a "smackdown," be my guest.

Well, I was using "smackdown" to describe RMJ's, uh... "style" of argumentation (arrogant, uncompromising) as much as the strength of the argument itself. Sorry RMJ, but there are times you're pretty easy to predict. I think that all printed lyrics are "bouge" pretty much seals the deal; but, it's obvious the Mylène is intentionally using the "bouge"/"rouge" relationship to try to pretty much get away with saying both words at the same time. To me, both words pretty much coexist there so arguing over it doesn't make much sense to me.

Watch again the performance. Or any perfomance.
2) As far as I've discovered there is no sexual connotation in common French usage around the word "bouge," although since sex involves movement you could certainly invent one; and
Funny that native French doesn't disagree with it.
3) The color of the "poisson rouge" is important in completing the naughty symbolism. (Surely there's no need to spell that out? OK? OK.)
Why it is ? Surely it relates in color but the fish is used to symbolize female genitalia even just for it's smell.
The color is only important for the visual image. But even without it it would do the thing.
I think that all printed lyrics are "bouge" pretty much seals the deal; but, it's obvious the Mylène is intentionally using the "bouge"/"rouge" relationship to try to pretty much get away with saying both words at the same time. Yes, of course it's about both words. Like said, it is double meaning. It is a word play. Mylène knows what people hears when you put together words "poisson bouge". It almost forms common fish name in, "poisson rouge". It's undeniable fact that people does the connection between those in their mind very easily. Since it makes sense.
But what is clever in Mylène's mind is that she also can say the "poisson rouge" without actually saying it and it leaves her option to use another word in place of it. Giving the whole concept whole new aspect. It's matter of details. And use of them.
