OK, I realize it's a bit lame to start a new thread on this but I couldn't see where else to put it. And I just have to crow a little here.

As of about half an hour ago, I finished my novel. Last chapter done and saved!

Well, OK, there are still some revisions to do, but the story is told from start to finish, and the revisions shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks if I work hard and I can start looking for an agent and a publisher.

DAMN this feels good!

Congrats, Deepwaters ! I wish you all the success in the world. Nothing feels better than when a creative project comes together...

Thanks, Lefty. To put it in perspective, this is the novel that sat half-finished on my hard drive for four years while I sank into depression and couldn't write. So this is even more amazing than usual. I really thought for so long that I'd never see this day.

I get the feeling that you may, in part, owe Alizée a signed copy. I hope you get a chance to hand it to her in person someday.

Hell, yes! At the very, very least!

Actually, here's my planned dedication, or well, one of three dedications. Anyone feels like correcting my undoubtedly pathetic French, feel free (I'd regard it as a favor):

Et dernier, mais certainement pas mineurs, pour tu, mon enchantresse, ma dauphin-femme, mon vent de changement. Si pas pour le contact gentil de ton esprit couratif et l'inspiration de ton voix et ton coeur, ce livre serait resté pour toujours demi-fini, et ma vie moitié-commencée. Merci boucoup!

I hope you get a chance to hand it to her in person someday.

Now that would be sweet! Of course I have no idea if her English is up to reading it or not, but it's the thought that counts.

"Congrats Deepwaters", and let me take advantage of this to say that I think you're a very intelligent and well spoken person. I've enjoyed your deep thoughts (comments) very much, and only hope that some of that knowledge rubs off on me..... Good luck with your novel, and everything else you do. ;)

that's fantastic, deepwaters:) . A whole novel is quite a feat.
I look forward to being your very first customer.

I know how adamant you writer types are. why, my sister wrote the beginning of a story, but I lost it. t'was not a pretty picture.

ps. on the "This book is dedicated to" page, oh heck you know what I gonna ask you.

Please see post #6 of this thread. Yes, I'm dedicating it to Her Grace, although there will be two others as well, and I won't name her explicitly.

Merci beaucoup!

congratulations sir !

Deepwaters,
That is fantastic news! I am thrilled for you. Absolutely not the least bit lame to start a new thread: this is a genuine worthwhile newsworthy event! (And I'm the one who had the chutzpah to start a thread about my trip to the dentist :) ). I look forward to being a customer as well. I'm certainly curious to find out what your novel is about.

riva2model64, BTW, Deepwaters already gave the draft of the dedication he's planning include to his "enchantresse" up in post #6 above. My French is a bit rusty, but it sounds very heartfelt to me.

And, delving into the realm of misty dreamy-eyed fantasy, let me posit that regardless of how famous I was, if I heard that the latest literary smash was somehow brought to fruition by something I'd done, there's a chance I might be curious to find out a little more about how and why from the author himself :).

Well done Deepwaters! Any word on a title or pen name so that I may keep an eye out for it in the future? Also what type of novel is it?

Deepwaters
07-01-2007, 11:58 PM
It's science-fiction, it will be by me under my actual name, and I have a tentative title but it may change. The story is set about 150 years from now, and involves a situation where two civilizations exist in the Solar System, a human civilization occupying Earth, and one of intelligent machines in the rest of the Solar System. The main characters include the machine ambassador to the Earth Union (a "Humanoid" machine, a computer program that mimics a human personality), a 16-year-old girl prodigy and psi adept, a private detective who is a gene-modified intelligent African Gray parrot, a group of human terrorists who want to destroy all the machines, and a group of machine rebels who want to destroy all the humans; there's a civil war among the machines, a colony of gene-modified parrots in the Amazon jungle, a machine government agent who infiltrates the rebels on Mars with lots of cloak-and-dagger James Bond stuff, etc.

When I actually have a publisher I'll give everyone the working details.

Garçoncanadien, a PM coming your way discussing the details of your correction and thank you very much!

Hey Deepwaters, sounds like my kind of novel. Be sure to keep us posted about the details of it so as I can keep an eye out as I said. I'd be sure to give my opinion if you wanted it :p.

Of course!

I realize belatedly that I should probably have translated that dedication, so here's what I mean it to say and what it eventually will:

"Last but certainly not least, for you, my enchantress, my dolphin-woman, my wind of change. If not for the healing touch of your beautiful spirit, and the inspiration of your voice and your heart, this book would have remained forever half-finished, and my life half-begun. Thank you very much."

I like the way you never actually named her, and left it so that only those who needed to know who she was would ever know. It seems more personal and meaningful tan merely stating "Thank you Alizée", the poetic qualities make it seem more sincere. Plus, if your command of the French language is that poetic and beautiful, I very much look forward to seeing how your command of the English language is expressed in the novel!

I thought that was best. She'll know who I mean (I'll make certain of that!) but no one else, present company excepted, really needs to.

Thanks, but my command of the French language is pretty poor at this point. I've only been studying it for 4 months. That's very nice, though. I appreciate it.

Except when the book hits the NY Times best seller list, and gets a bunch of reviews.....and then they decide to make a movie from it....and one of the stars is Alizée.....and then it gets nominated for an Oscar....so Alizée has to come to Hollywood for the showing....and the book's author gets to escort her down the red carpet.

Edit: And if all that doesn't happen, I've just provided you the sub-plot for your next book, a romance novel.

That's not a literal translation, but i think I keep the spirit of it...:)

Thank you, Dan! Between you, Garçconcanadien, and a little more time I may come off sounding like I'm not totally illiterate. ;)

That's a lovely story, OGRE. Unfortunately, I couldn't see insulting Alizée with any role other than a main lead, and Lydia McGuinness, my young psychic prodigy, is a blond New Yorker and a French accent would be all wrong. Oh, well . . .

What? I don't even know what that would be like. That would be Lili's anti-Lili.

Deepwaters
07-02-2007, 08:10 PM
Yeah, not that I imagined Lydia with a strong Brooklyn accent (she lives in Manhattan and her father is a government minister). But I don't think Alizée could play her.

It would be awesome to get a movie deal out of it, though, and I think this story would make a great movie. Oh, now I'm really dreamin' . . .

That's what J.K. Rowling thought when she had Harry Potter published, and now she's richer than the Queen. You never know you may bring science-fiction to the masses and become mega-rich. And, then, you'll just have to remember all the love and support you got from your friends at AA ;) .
