I'm with Moe, I think it will bring Alizee back in the spot light a little for a little but and that would would be awesome for her if she wants to release her next album soon.

My gut tells me that she needs to release her single before he does.

To be fair, he is pretty good (particularly his cover of Tainted Love), but I don't think he could do Moi... Lolita any justice. Plus, he's a young adult guy, not a young girl, anyone else find that strange  Is this just spite on behalf of Mylène? Aloowing someone else to release Alizée's most famous and popular song.

It's really strange. Does he not realize what he's singing?

The only way I can comprehend this is if Julien is "coming out." I'm not making fun here, I'm serious.

One word...WHAT THE FRAG WAS HE THINKING!!?? Moi Lolita is Alizee´s song and no other person alive will match her...not even an overgrown dude which by the way remembers me somebody who i allready hate.

Thanks a lot POP IDOL....:(

I've kind of stayed away from those videos with a deep visceral loathing, and haven't heard him enough to understand his lyrics. Did he change them?

Is he singing "Ma Lolita" (My Lolita) instead of "Moi Lolita" (Me, Lolita)? Is he doing a Humbert Humbert? I don't know, but that's the only way it can make any sense for a man to sing this song at all. And it's kind of disgusting even so.

I presume from the intonation and altered melody that the whole performance is very sardonic. It would seem that part of its, er, appeal is the cognitive dissonance of a wan, morose man singing (if you can call it that) about being a reluctantly sexually precocious pubescent girl.

There's presumably a reason that Julien was labeled the French Sanjaya by PerezHilton.

Julien's single will apparently be available Aug. 20. I got this off alizeealliance.

http://www4.fnac.com/Shelf/article.aspx?PRID=2010947&Origin=ALIZEE_LIVE&OriginClick=yes

One thing that is interesting about this is that it provides a reasonable data point regarding the lead time between announcement of a single's availability and the single itself (~5 weeks). Thus, if Alizee is going to come out with a new single, I'm guessing we ought to be seeing roughly the same kind of lead time. With her name on people's lips because of this, now would certainly be an opportune time....

Remember that it's Mylène who owns the right to the song. She gave Julien permission to release the single, and it's doubtful that Alizée had anything to do with it. While it could be an opportune time to release her new album, it can also be seen as a bad time to do so. Because it can be looked at both ways, this will just be another time when she might release it, but likely won't. Sorta like July 4 :p

Actually, there is a standardized mechanism for obtaining cover rights. (I don't know the details in France but I am hypothesizing that it's substantially the same).
See e.g.
http://www.cleverjoe.com/articles/music_copyright_law.html
There is usually a way to negotiate a better deal with the artist directly, but it's not strictly necessary.

This si really strange what's happening with Julien Doré.
What he does with "Moi...LOlita" , on "La nouvelle star" (Pop idol) was just made to surprise the Jury, a kind of absurd, poetic, " surreallitic" exercice to show his originality, his eccentricity...

So i don't understand how this could be his first single release...
I think it's not good for him to start by something that's not is own material, and it's more a joke than other thing.

By the way, the music and the lyrics are not exactly the same as the orginal.(But it's not about assuming to be Lolita, or being in love with her either.)

But I can understand what Mylène does, when she give up her rights to Julien. I'm sure she love to appeared " hype", and she's receptive to the eccentricity of the guy (and maybe more than receptive...;) )

But i dont' see it as a bad news for Alizée, anyway.

I don't know what thinking about all that

I'm completely with Mylène because she's the author of the lyrics so it's always a good thing to her to accept even if she doesn't care about Julien at all :p

But it's very sad because Alizée left good performances on the Moi...Lolita title that Julien won't do...

Much of the income a songwriter or publishing company make is collected through these organizations.

I have no doubt that Mylene made MUCH more than Alizee did. Artists usually don't get a very good deal on their first contract.

I will admint that I have wondered if that is part of why Alizee seems to be waiting until after the 7 year line. Perhaps to clear some old contract hurdle?

Hm..are you sure that's not some other guy covering Julien?

Also, I noted in one of those things that "Mylene agreed to let him release it as a single, but only with the original lyrics, not the altered ones he used on Nouvelle Star". Does anyone know what his alterations were?

There was also a little thing about how it was a bit sticky because Mylene is with Universal, which runs Star Academy (the rival show to Nouvelle Star).

I found this a little interesting to say the least, according to Wikipedia his most memorable performances and revelations on Nouvelle Star were while singing "Moi... Almost all famous music artists has what is known as a 'signature song'. What this means is that this song identifies this artist and any other artist who would even think of recording it as their own is committing commercial suicide. Julien is taking a huge risk with Moi-Lolita.

Here, finally, is the discussion of the attempt Julien made to alter the lyrics. Anyone who wants to translate is welcome to do so.

Mylène Farmer refused. I wished to slip in "aphorisme dadaïste" [Dadaistic aphorism] beside "bar blues" in lieu of "bas bleus" and "donner ma langue aux chattes" in place of "chat". She found these to be vulgar considering that it was sung as if by a fourteen year old girl in a miniskirt. She's right, vulgarity does ensue . . .

Wait she thought this would be vulgar, I am confused didn't she already slip hidden meanings into the songs?

Deepwaters

The key word there, I believe, is "hidden." Yes, there's a lesbian connotation to "donner ma langue aux chat," but the French slang for a vagina is "chatte" not "chat," (if I'm not mistaken) so replacing the word would have made it too up-front and obvious. One of the dividers between sexy and crude is subtlety.

Right after that, the article says "...balance-t-il ironiquement."

I get the feeling he was kind of rolling his eyes sarcastically, like "Gee, she decided these lyrics would be, like, too vulgar...remember when they were being sung by a 14-year-old girl in a miniskirt? Gee, hmm, I guess the meaning of 'vulgar' has changed over the years..."

BTW what is the pronunciation difference between "chattes" and "chat"? One slightly audible "t"?

Well, on this one I agree with Mylène and disagree with Julien. (Admittedly I'm biased because I don't much like Julien's version of ML to begin with.) I did see the bit about irony, but disagree with that as well. I just don't consider Mylène to be vulgar. She's very sexual at times, and also very dark, dealing with sex, death, and despair, but not crude. Usually. :D
