I have read that French drivers are aggressive. Is this true, or do they just seem this way to a newcomer?

According to Americans, the French are aggressive at many things, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are thought to be aggressive drivers, which is true in my opinion, at least compared to Americans, I don't know about other Europeans.

Go to Naples, Italy they are agressive drivers. French drivers are tame drivers in my opinion.

it all depends,we ran into some rednecks racing trucks and flinging mud on the highway, but that dosen't mean all US drivers are aggressive, same for the french as well, there are always some that do drive aggressive, while others don't

I've driven in many different US cities, and I've determined that each one has its own unique characteristics when it comes to driving. What I would call "aggressive" in one city might be the norm in another city. Hence, aggressiveness is often measured by the offset from the mean rather than an absolute value. I suspect this characteristic applies between US driving and Foreign driving. The key is to quickly learn the expectations of the city your driving in, and attempt to operate within the general frame of that expectation.

That doesn't look any worse to me than US 101 northbound during rush hour, and not as bad as the freeways in LA 24/7.

In Europe, the more you go south (by the Mediterranean sea), the stranger driver's behaviour is.
In Marseille, traffic lights are there for decorating the streets. "Sliding" a red light as they say is their national sport. It's even worse in southern Italy and beyond your imagination on the other side of the mediterranean...
In Paris it's different, Parisian drivers have more respect for common rules but they have always been well kwown for being bad tempered.
Boileau, a 17th century french writer has described a traffic jam in Paris by the year 1700. It has'nt changed much since, except Parisians don't drive horse carts anymore...
For those of you who are (very) good at French, here it is : http://poesie.webnet.fr/poemes/France/boileau/14.html

Sadly the French tank drivers weren't very aggresive in 1940:

Yeah, yeah, cheap shot - I know. For some balance:

http://www.motorpasion.com/images/Trafico_en_Rusia-1.JPGTraffic from Moscu, pretty much looks like Mexico City's traffic...

Now, imagine all that traffic all over the city.

It's really not all that incredible. It's a road... with cars on it, it happens on occasion.

Yeah, it's a road. But it has 6/7 lanes going in both directions.

I think that is one big ass road.
