View Full Version : What song should I play this week?

DJ_Greg

Hey guys, I thought it'd be cool to get your opinions on what Alizée song I should play on my radio show this week. It could be like the official Alizée America song request. Three weeks ago (I've sorta been on a 3 wk break) I played "A contre-courant" and "J'ai pas vingt ans." This week I was leaning toward "Amélie m'a dit" or "Elle, Elle L'a"...but I'll play whatever you guys vote for!

So what do you want to hear?

Urb4n

Veni Vedi Vici, hands down, just heard it, I love it.

VVV or JPVA. You said that there is a streaming version of your show, right?

Edit: Oops. If you've already played JPVA, I'd suggest VVV or Toc de Mac instead.

Mon Maquis DVD version (way better live!)

True, although it might be a little too "dance pop" for my show. I forgot to mention, my format is generally modern and indie rock, so I'm trying to pick songs that don't stray too far from that. Then again, I play whatever I want, so it doesn't really matter in the end.

Since I didn't do a poll, I'll have to count up the votes before tomorrow afternoon and see what won.

OK, here are the current standings for this week (I counted every vote, even if people mentioned more than one):

Amelie m'a dit - 2
Moi...Lolita - 1
L'email - 3
Mon Maquis - 1
Hey ! Amigo ! - 1

I'll take votes until 2:30 or 3:00 p.m. EST tomorrow.

So are all the votes in? Right now, VVV will be the song, with Toc de mac running a close second. It's funny...I never would have picked either of those songs for this week.

Hahaha, I can see why that might be strange for a first-timer. But that's actually part of my "thing" - the self-deprecation. Surprisingly, people have told me they like it, so I've kept it up. I could pretend those things don't happen, but I think it's funnier when I don't. :D

DJ_Greg
08-18-2006, 05:19 PM
There was one show where I was playing a song from my iPod, and a friend was hanging out in the station, looking at the songs I have on it. Now, you can do that without changing the song, but she had never used an iPod before, and accidentally hit the foward button, changing the song right in the middle.

THAT one I didn't point out.

Hahaha. I played a metal band covering Soundgarden's "The Day I Tried to Live." I think they were called Between The Buried And Me. That's the closest I've gotten to doing that.

I've thrown random hip-hop tracks into shows before, but since no one who listens to my show likes rap, I kinda stopped doing that.

That doesn't matter. It was over a month ago. July 21, to be exact.

Even so, it wouldn't be the first time I played the same song in different weeks. For example, I've been playing "Harrowdown Hill" every week for a few weeks now, as well as other songs.

I just play whatever I like at the moment, so eventually I will play both of those songs again.

Ah, you guys all missed the best stuff. I always play my best songs at the beginning of the show (not on purpose...it just happens that way).

I can't decide whether to use Rapidshare, MegaUpload, Badongo, or whatever to upload my shows. I want something that's easy for people to download. Some of those sites are laid out very poorly, and it's tough to figure out where you need to click in order to download the file. Those of who use them know, but the casual downloader doesn't. Any ideas?

50-60 MB for each 2 hr show recorded at 64 kbps.

My old shows, which were recorded at 96 kbps, are 75-100 MB. Eventually I'd like to have all of them uploaded somewhere. Not that anyone is really interested in downloading my old radio shows, but I just thought it'd be cool to at least have the option.

I could have sworn "Toc de mac" was your favorite. Oh well.

"Amélie m'a dit" is my current favorite, but you guys keep requesting other songs! :)

Seriously, if I never found this site, I'd probably have played Amelie last week and JPVA again this week. Instead, I've played four songs...and I probably wouldn't have picked any of them on my own! (Don't get me wrong, they're great songs, and I wouldn't have played them if I didn't like them).

It's definitely more fun to have people from this site requesting songs, than just me picking everything all the time.

Actually, Youpidou (and Youpidoo) does not exactly mean yippee.

Youpi is French word and means yippee in English. Youpidou is just Mylène's own, made up, word. Why she added the "-dou" (and "-doo" in English version) in the "youpi" is unknown. Prolly because it sounds better in the songs... or maybe some other reason was behind it. It's hard to tell.

You're right, yippee in French is only youpi. The "-dou" Mylène added could be a reference to those old scoubidous (that word sounds exactly the same), thingies that French children knotted with plastic strips in the 60s:
Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoubidou

Furthermore, there was also a well known song about those "toys" by Sacha Distel in 1958.

Probably no show this week. Well, I dunno. I found out this morning that my high school best friend's mom died a few days ago. Funeral is on Friday. So I either won't be doing a show or it'll be a late decision. Probably a somber one, if I end up doing it. I'll keep you guys posted.

You should play "A quoi reve une jeune fille". I don't know what the english trans is, but the music and her singing is pleasant and may fit the mood since attending the funeral.

[QUOTE=aFrenchie;6869]You're right, yippee in French is only youpi. The "-dou" Mylène added could be a reference to those old scoubidous (that word sounds exactly the same), thingies that French children knotted with plastic strips in the 60s:

Are there any old timers here that remember Blondie? She had a song called "Denis". She says the word "Youpidou" several times in that song. Blondie sang some lyrics in French in a few of her songs. I don't know if she was part French, but I'd really like Lili to cover one of her songs. I'm sure Lili would make those old songs sizzle with her voice and stage presence. :)

BTW, "Youpidou" being a made up word or not, is really a surprise to me since the song "Denis" came out in 1978. At least, that's what is printed in my CD. Frenchie, could you look into this. Maybe Blondie was singing another word that sounds like "Youpidou".

Just found the lyrics here:

You're right about the part in the middle that is in French. But the "doo-be-do" things are in the English sections (and "spelled" in an English way).

I finally caught the show this week, that was way cool. Great stuff DJ_Greg!

...but you aren't fooling anyone, we can all tell you are an Alizée fan and used Moe as an excuse to play her. You know what Yupidoo means, I bet you prolly could have sang along to the whole song too :D

I hung out with a bunch of friends last night, and one of them basically said the same thing...

Jon: "I call bullshit. I might believe that someone from UAE requested a song, but how convenient that it just happened to be Alizée."

Furthermore, there was also a well known song about those "toys" by Sacha Distel in 1958.

(I warned you, it's old and silly :D)

Scooby Doo?

I wonder if there's a connection.

It looks like scoubidous are the same as "lanyards" (or laniard), which we used to make at camp when I was a kid.

You should read the interpretations of that song at...I don't seem to have the link. It was posted here recently. I'll look around and edit this post if I find it.

Anyway, it seems like a lot of people missed that post about my friend's mom. That was actually last week, and I ended up not doing my show. This week, at the top of the first hour, I just thanked the DJ who subbed my show for me and didn't say why I was absent. Originally I was going to, but I decided against it.

Why do you want to get banned in the first place? We are trying to increase our numbers and you talking about getting banned. You need to change your approach!
