Ok, so it's 9/30 in France, and Mademoiselle Juliette is now available on virgin.fr, as well as iTunes France, and no doubt other platforms as well. Has anybody located one where we can legally purchase it from the states? Virgin still won't allow non-French purchasers, and iTunes is the same way.

I don't think it's just the download sites themselves. I suspect there's something to do with the record companies coordinating which songs/albums are released where, how royalties are dealt with, etc. etc. Probably the laws are different enough that the company has to deal with the money from a "single bought in France" differently from a "single bought in US", and if they don't think it's worth it to set up the infrastructure, then they just won't do it. Bites to be us, in that case :p

I emailed RCA US about it...I got no reply. You emailed RCA Finland, they told you "sorry". I don't feel very powerful about influencing the record company's decision where to release a single for electronic download. Maybe they have to do some upfront investment to Apple to get on the iTunes catalog in each country and they don't think they can break even on the American market or something. Who knows.

How else can angry and impatient customer base protest the bad decisions of the distributor ?

The irony here is this goes against centuries of French cultural objectives. The French have seen their language and culture as under attack from the winds of globalism, with the English taking center stage. They insist on French language versions of treaties. They insist on playing a certain amount of French songs on French radio. Now we have a bunch of mostly English speaking fans wishing to jump into the culture and what does French corporate say? Non!

Hell, I'm tempted to write the French Ambassador. Worst case is nothing happens. Best case is he passes it to his Commerce minister back in Paris and the Commerce minister contacts the distributor and asks if it's true. Companies can ignore pleas from fans; they tend to at least answer queries from government officials.

Yeah, but it looks like you have to sign up for the service and even though you can download the file so that you can play it offline (or only streaming if you choose), it is a monthly type of agreement (though you get the first month for one euro. Anyway, I don't think I'd want to do that if the agreement was in English and in the US.
Next option please. Unfortunately I am at this moment heading out of town for two days. I really hoped I could get this before I left. Hope you all get it worked out by the time I return (but not likely, eh?).

Guys, the key is that instead of directly trying to purchase the single, you have to sign up for an account. Then, you'll get an email with a code which you can redeem for any song, including Mademoiselle Juliette. You won't be asked for a single credit card digit.

After receiving the code, activate it through the bottom link in the "Ma Fnacmusic" menu. You should get an email saying that you can download a song. Go to Mademoiselle Juliette and click the download link. I did this but it didn't download. If this happens to you, find your download history (through a link in the Ma Fnacmusic menu, I think it was) and click on the title of the song. It will ask you where to save it.

Deepwaters, yes, people are trying to get codes by signing up for extra accounts. This is done by using multiple email addresses, or by using a Gmail address, which allows you to put +something at the end of your username.

If you try to play it in Windows Media Player it should go get the license for you that allows you to play it.

Fnac could end up paying thousands of dollars in downloads for people who can’t even buy their products. It’s their own fault for not protecting themselves from people creating accounts from outside of France, but I still feel kind of bad about it, even though we’ve done nothing wrong. At least Alizée and her record company should get paid. I’ll be glad when the CD’s come out so I can buy them instead.

This is a messy way to release a song that's been long awaited by an international audience.

WMP should've opened a window where you put your fnac account login. I did that and the file didn't play...but then I tried Winamp and it played fine. I've never worked with DRM so I'm not the best person to ask about that, sorry:o

I uninstalled WMP 11 and reinstalled WMP 10. WMP 10 offered me the option to acquire the license, and I did. Now I can play the file.

I don't think so, otherwise I wouldn't do it. I'm sure Fnac has to pay for every one of those downloads which will get counted. Fnac will be the ones to loose money on this. As I said before, it's their own fault, but that doesn't make me feel any better.

Fnac is assuming that if they give you one free download, you will buy more from them in the future. Of course we can't because they won't accept our credit cards. We are taking advantage of them knowing we will probably never buy from them in the future. If they would accept my credit card I'd buy something to make it up to them.

I hope this situation gets remedied and we are given more honorable alternatives for purchasing Alizée's music. It's left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe it's weird for me to care about Fnac, but I just don't like doing business this way.

I feel the same was as lefty, but this wont hurt her sales. It's only a few downloads and it's not like we're going to be satisfied with it. We'll be buying songs and albums as soon as we can.

I hope you're right. But if this is common knowledge among international fans, there could be thousands of free downloads today from thousands of new accounts that will never buy anything from them. I don't know how big Fnac is, but maybe it's still just a drop in the bucket to them.

If nothing else, it still makes them look foolish.

I don't think so, otherwise I wouldn't do it. I'm sure Fnac has to pay for every one of those downloads which will get counted. Fnac will be the ones to loose money on this. As I said before, it's their own fault, but that doesn't make me feel any better.

Fnac is assuming that if they give you one free download, you will buy more from them in the future. Of course we can't because they won't accept our credit cards. We are taking advantage of them knowing we will probably never buy from them in the future. If they would accept my credit card I'd buy something to make it up to them.

I hope this situation gets remedied and we are given more honorable alternatives for purchasing Alizée's music. It's left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe it's weird for me to care about Fnac, but I just don't like doing business this way.

And thanks for the offer, Snatcher. But the record companies should not be putting us in this position.

If anyone is like me (and I am a stingy penny-pincher), they'll spend money on the single as soon as its possible. Right now, this is our only opportunity to buy it.

And I'm sure there are French people not doing whatever it takes to get 1 song that are just signing up for the free song. Fnac knows what they're doing, I'm sure.

For what it's worth, FNAC is pretty seriously large. It was one of the big sponsors for Alizée's En Concert tour, among other things. They've kind of hard to define - they call themselves "traffickers in curiosities." I would look at them as being similar to a hybrid of Best Buy and Hammechler Schlemmer, with a bit of Spencer's attitude tossed in on the side.

This sucks... I was in France, until 3 hours ago.... I couldn't buy it there because it wasn't in shops, and now, I can't buy it at home because I'm not French.... :(

Don't know if anyone reads this thread but I just went to Alizee's official site and I clicked Mademoiselle Juliette in iTunes. And I converted my English iTunes store to French iTunes store, got to view the item which was the single and then I can buy the single for 0.99 euros. Equivalent to roughly 1.39 American dollars.

I was able to get there too, but the store bounces American iTunes store accounts back to the American store when you try to purchase the song ( I did )

Looking forward to when I can purchase it here in the USA
