Yes, it's taken with film SLR camera. And scanned (directly from film or from photo in some cases ) later in photo agency.

And as you guess, they have good scanners. These photo agencies provides photos to all the news papers, magazines and other media that needs them. So the quality must be as good as possible.

well, it's a sketch not a photo
every artist has got to leave his/her signature (or else I won't be able to tell neoteny's sketches from brad's)

if you look at several earlier works by Van Gogh, they are very much out of proportion, but some of those works are highly praised, because they catch other elements. take a peek at potato eaters, one of Van Gogh's better known early works. (http://thales.cica.es/rd/Recursos/rd98/Historia/02/potato_eaters.jpg) instead of being Canon 1ds mkII precise, he brought about the emotion of the people and setting

here, you have captured Alizée's fervor (and beauty)
and because of this it is a great work, it doesn't have to be precise
in order for me to appreciate it

There's nothing wrong in your picture !

I didn't mention that nose because I didn't like it ! I just think it's funny looking. Don't you think ? It looks kinda misshaped. And it is so even in the original ! The shading in grayscale image just makes it more visible.

I know exactly why you like to draw her. And you have no idea how much I respect people who devotes their time to draw her, write poems of her, or anything !

It might just that the shadow on the left side of the nose in the drawing is darker accentuating it more in the drawing than in the photograph. Try lightening the shadow a little bit, but overall quite nice neoteny. :)

I wouldn't say that Amelie, neoteny captures the details of the photographs but I find in alot of yours you capture the emotions instead. It's hard to explain except in some of yours you just feel has if you've captured the spirit of the person you've drawn, sometimes more than the photographs themselves.

well, thanks, but i don't think, that i ever could draw just like that..so real... my paintings are made with more fantasy, i like to change things, for example, lips color, eyes shades, clothes colors, body stance and etc.

that guy has a real talent. the paintings are so realistic, seem like i am looking to a photo...sad, that he didn't paint Alizee...

I don't know what all the fuss is about so control can copy a photograph, good for him he is an excellent draftsman, but I never saw the point in creating a drawing that looks like a photograph, you have cameras to do that. Yes you should be able to draw your subject accurately but allow yourself some freedom to be creative. There is more to creating a good portrait than the ability of creating a photographic likeness, I liked leaving unimportant areas open for the imagination to work with. But I shouldn't really comment since I haven't drawn anything in years (after studying photography I found copying photographs tedious preferring to draw from life, and haven't had a muse that inspired me to draw anything in a while. The closest I have right now would be Alizée but I would be stuck copying someone else's photograph).

PS: I love watching these flash animations by Pat McMichael of his drawing process. Animated Slideshows (http://www.patmcmichael.com/quicktimepage.html). They show how he builds his drawings up to the final version, hours of work reduced down to seconds. For the finished drawings check out his Graphite Gallery (http://www.patmcmichael.com/). And his deviantArt page (http://pat-mcmichael.deviantart.com/). But again why spend hours copying a photograph, I find it really tedious myself.

you know twitch...you really make good points about alot of things. from an artists perspective, drawing anything from people to something as simple as fruit can can be described nothing more as just a hobby or a passion. to me its both. copying a photograph is tedious, but i dont necessarily think it that way. no... in this case i like to think Alizee is standing right in front me, posing. looking gorgeous! sort of like as if i were copying still life that being grapes in a bowl in my kitchen. i love the photographic likeness of those beautiful drawings from Pat. espically the ones of Zelda and Link. i think they're great!

The GIF is pretty big (360Kb), but it fades eerily from image to image. Each individual key frame (each original image) required it's own custom distortion matrix to overlay well from key to key.

Be patient with slower connections ... it'll be there ! The animation stops briefly at the finished artwork image, then re-cycles to the start.

thanks REM. i'll try that. to tell you the truth, id much rather have a scanner. i will get that scanner! i want all of you to see every detail when i draw Alizee. im tired of holding my breath for a shot. i have to take several shots just to get the clarity the way i want it. and dont get me started on the lighting.

And it's usually much quicker to take photo than scan. :)

Beautiful drawing except that her hair still looks too light. Could be due to the scan though. Anyway the drawing resembles her picture very well ;)

The hair is a bit light, though that looks a lot like the 16 year old version of her, when she had lighter highlights and/or sun-fading that made her hair lighter colored. A very nice drawing, either way :-)
