Unfortunately, I didn't fly. My plan was to go to college, enter ROTC and see if I can get into a flying program afterwards. Things didn't work out and my eyesight was not good. Sometime during my senior H.S., my co-worker/friend said he was enlisting and I should tag along to one of his meetings with the recruiter. Next thing I knew, I'm in boot camp being yelled by DI's at Lackland AFB. And my buddy back then... well he didn't make it in for some reason (the bastage). All in all, I don't regret a thing about joining and I was able to see the world. Screw a stateside assignment, let the military pay for my travels, was the motto! You appreciate the USA and all that we take for granted a lot more. Sometimes I wished I stay in for the 20-years...

You wouldn't believe the number of times it gets mispronounced - Evan becomes Even, Ivan, Yvonne, Adam, Ethan, Ed... it wasn't until highschool that I had a substitute teacher who pronounced it right on the first try (which is scary, because if you put an S on the end, it's a fairly common last name). It's actually just a Gaellic version of "John," but I don't bring that up much :-)

They would question kids on campus and I had to pick up a new nickname. From then on people would still refer to me as Jamm, I had to explain that Jamm is dead. I guess people thought he was a kid from another school, so rumors spread around and suddenly everyone was mourning the death of this guy named Jamm. Some people are full of BS and started saying they were at his funeral, saying they were knew that kid in elementry school, or they used to party with that guy and stuff. It's still one helluva inside joke for me and my buddies. We decided that Jamm died getting into a fight with a polar bear in Mexico, some still pour a foaty out for our fallen brother... :(

Edit 2: Hmmm and after reading the rest of the thread, (At first I thought 16 pages was far too much...) I realised that there were some pretty funny stories in there! That Jamm story was pretty funny, Bird :P

When it comes to nicknames, throughout my entire highschool life, I was only referred to Andrew by the teachers (and even some of them called me my nick). They call me "yehson" (my surname), which they pronounce wrong anyways as "yeeson". During year 9 camp, a few friends and I were canoeing and accidentally capsized it. I needed to borrow some shampoo (I swear I had to borrow it, it wasn't mine. I'm serious!) later that night and the brand of shampoo was called "Johnson's Kids". And it all starts there. "Hey, here's some Johnson's, yehson." "Lol@babies' shampoo" "More like yonson's kids!"... We were 14 year old kids... we were lame. They began to call me "Yonson" and eventually it became "Yon" or "Yonz".

Now that... is an embarassing place for the birth of a nickname... A brand of kids' shampoo lol.
