View Full Version : Her best song EVER?

I've recently been in a mental debate with myself over which of her songs is her absolute best of all time....... in terms of production, addictive qualities, fame, everything you could possibly judge a song by.

So far the war in my head is between Moi Lolita and J'en Ai Marre..... with Fifty Sixty sitting back in the third place chair watching the first two duke it out.

They are both pretty equal in my mind, Moi Lolita setting off her career and making her famous while J'en Ai Marre (I'm assuming) increased her fanbase exponentially (damn that sailor suit!).
-------------------------

what do you guys think? do you have any other songs that you think could beat them?

If i could pick 1 song, it would be "Hey Amigo". The chorus never gets old.

Well, it really depends. I judge my favorite Alizée songs in terms of enjoyability and quality. I've always said, and always will say that "Gourmandises" is my favorite song by her, and definitely one of the best that she ever did, in terms of music production, lyrics, and the style that best represents Alizée.

But in terms of quality, I have to say that Par Les Paupières is the best song she ever did, and the fact that the song gets less recognition than it does baffles me. It's a magical song, so much fun to sing along to, and I never tire of those drums!

I have this mental debate ALL the time.
It's me, myself and I and we all have a favorite. I will not say who likes which at this time but, it is a spirited debate between 'Hey Amigo', JEAM' and Lily Town'
I love Lily Town, and the flow of JEAM...
But there is some thing about that chorus of Hey Amigo that I just mesmerizes me...

Rarely do I see Hey Amigo at the top of someones list besides mine...

Production and "fame" is irrelevant to me. I only go on how it affect me emotionally, and if I have to choose one song it's A Contre Courant. Preferably En concert version because I like her live-voice better ('flawed tones' just make her sound even cuter) and the music is better/more powerfull/more alive live.

Put me down for JPVA as well. Though lyrically it's not her strongest, everything else about it is amazingly catchy, fun and upbeat. It's the perfect ratio of Alizée's innate cuteness and sex appeal. And even the reorchestration rocks!

Moi Lolita, J'en Ai Marre, L'Alizé, Gourmandises... Those because they were the first Alizée songs I heard and well, they are awesome. And A Contre-Courant, Mademoiselle Juliette cause they are just awesome too... And Fifty-Sixty, Parler Tout Bas, Lilly Town, Coeur Deja Pris... Can't really pick any single one at all :P

What I'd most like to listen to right now tho is that La Isla Bonita remix from that Mexican Psychedelices CD.

I'd probably say J'en Ai Marre if I had to.

"J'en ai marre" is my personal top song just because that's how I discovered her and I branched off from that. "L'email a des ailes" is now my second favorite... vocally, it is probably the most *beautiful* song by her.

Well, in my humble opinion there is more than one right answer:

Musically and pure melts-your-heart factor: Par les Paupières
As a special place in my heart as my discovery song/video (and best driving song): J'ai Pas Vingt Ans !
For fame and sales: Moi Lolita

I could probably think of other categories but with one song from each album, I think I'll leave it at that.

interesting you brought up each album.....

I have definitely agreed (in my mind) that the best one of each album is Gourmandises, JeAM, Fifty Sixty, respectively.

My problem is I'm trying to find out which of those tops the rest

J'ai Pas Vingt Ans is the most beloved song to me, but my second place song is always changing..

like, it was JEAM, then it was La Isla Bonita, then it was Fifty Sixty, then it was Decollage.. and so on. right now, it's a struggle between L'Alize and Gourmandises.

CAN'T DECIDE!

1 : a contre-courant, no doubt, this song and especially the video clip got me alihooked
2 : par les paupiéres, a great song, that never got the attention it deserves
3 : kind of hard to pick so its a shared place : tempête, coeur déjà pris, lui ou toi, idéaliser, l'alizé, j'ai pas vingt ans

I think you have to make a distinction between "favourite" song and the "best" song.
My favourite Alizee songs are Gourmandises and ACC, but I think her "best" song is undoubtedly "Moi Lolita". All the elements - production, music, lyrics, image, etc. - just came together on this song like no other and that is why it is her signature song. It is the song that defined her early career and continues to cast a shadow over all her subsequent musical endeavors (much to her chagrin, I suspect).

My all time favorite is Par Les Paupieres. A Contre- Courant a close 2nd. Toc De Mac, Lui OU Toi, Hey Amigo, Parlor Tout Bas are all even thirds. Actually there is little difference between all of Alizee's songs. I enjoy them all and certain ones on certain days depending on my mood.

I have to agree. Moi Lolita has magic in it. For pure listening it has to be on top.

My favorites include ACC and her performances of LIB, Y (En Concert) and her duet for Adélaïde.

Moi...Lolita is definitely a song that Alizee can't ever move away from.
even when im trying to hook my friends into the Alizee cycle, i'll of course, show them JEAM and such, but Moi...Lolita is something that just has to be shown too.

it's definitely the Alizeeish song out there. :p

I have to agree with alot of people here that PLP is her best song. It is an awesome song in it's own right but what makes it so special is Lili's voice, it is just beautiful in this song.

Moi...Lolita also has to get a mention, being the song that hooked me into Alizee in the first place. I just never tire of listening to ML and let's face it, without ML Lili might not be around today.

When I think of HER best song ever, i'd have to say songs that SHE wrote.
Personally that means I leave out MCE and G, and Psych isn't fully hers, but yet it is.
So i'll just say PLP, because it's not too depressing, not too upbeat and bubbly, and just right, and it belongs on the album that represents her more. :)

That's exactly what I mean. ;)
Psych wasn't even fully hers as she did use composers like her husband to do some music-writing as well, but thinking of which album fully represented her in it's fullest, it's Psych. So I pick from there if it's HER best song ever. :D

well.. then i wonder how much of the new album can be considered hers?
i mean, since psych is supposed to be just a experimental album, the new one should be different than, no?

by that i mean, will she stick to what she feels is her, or try to get something that the fans will like?

What I'm hoping for is that she starts composing her pieces majorly, instead of relying too heavily on other musicians. Sure she can describe the way she wants it to be in the best detail but in the end, it's not fully her lest she wrote it ALL herself. :D

No offense to Taylor Swift fans, but it is a good thing she can write because she couldn't carry a tune in a shower. I guess that does sound offensive. Sorry again! I agree with Mr. Barrett that Alizee should try her hand with writing. I think it is more difficult to write songs without playing a musical instrument like the guitar or piano although close collaboration with Jeremy could be the ticket for her. He does play the piano and guitar I believe. Maybe she will surprise us on her next album with at least one song she wrote.

Well since she's edging on the electro side I don't really think she's overtly interested in real instruments anymore (to my dismay and to the dismay of other musicians of this forum).
All she really needs is a good program, maybe a synthesizer and some samplers, and of course a decent ear, and she can just plot out the sound she wants with computer clicks and experimentation.

With technology today, nearly anyone can write a song without skill or instrumental ability. They really just need the ear for music, and those songs can either be amazingly written on the program, or poorly written. No matter what, these songs have a nasty habit of being horrid and topping American charts. :p

Song production is a lengthy process if you want the best effect, but black metal musicians purposely do it as simple as they can to achieve the more "truer" sound, as if they didn't have second chances in recording. :p

What Psych presented was Alizée writing lyrics, while she hired others to present HER image through their music in their way. Technically it's not fully hers, but it would be interesting to see how her ear leads her to her own possibilities.
In music there's a lot to consider into making a song, you can keep it simple with 4 tracks and 4 instruments, or you can layer it for all eternity to create nothing short of an orchestral masterpiece in 5:1 or some exclamation of that sorts. :p
Aside from this she has to ask if she's willing to perform some songs live. Live can only bring up so much, so playing a 400 track song live with a band of 4 people, can get disastrous. Of course there's only so much of that song that can be played live without the rest of the tracks played through playback. :p

(aka: Soulja Boy)Unfortunately you speak the truth. I was speaking to the difficulty of matching lyrics to music. The synchronicity of sorts for both aspects of a song. I guess Alizee could create either without the other and someone else could add one or the other. I never considered a computer program. I'm with you about the fading art of music using real instruments and real musicians. I am kind of a purest in this way. That's why I don't like most pop music. I detest the 70's disco for the same reason of canned music without real musicians. At least up to now Alizee has had for the most part real musicians. It is a scary thought if Alizee goes completely techno. With that ugly tattoo on her forearm and canned music may be more than this man can stomach. I'm taking a wait and see approach and I really hope that Alizee knocks our socks off with the new album. No matter what I wish Alizee the best always.

What Psych presented was Alizée writing lyrics, while she hired others to present HER image through their music in their way.

Incorrect. Alizée did not write the lyrics to any songs in Psychédélices. They were written by Jean Fauque, Daniel Darc, Oxmo Puccino, and one or two others; Jérémy may have contributed a little to a couple of them, too although he was not the main lyricist on any of them. I'm sure Her Grace had plenty of input and approved the final product herself, but she did not actually write the lyrics any more than she composed the music.

I've seen no poetry written by her, but I've read some examples of prose, and her French is colloquial, informal, and a bit idiosyncratic. What I've seen is not stuff great poetry is made of -- but you never know. If she tried, there might be more talent there than we've seen so far. ;)

Not that she needs it -- her talent lies in her voice, her dancing, and her rapport with the audience. She's a performer. A good one, potentially a very great one. Do the Gods give all gifts to one person?
