man alizee really puts this version to shame :)

however, it is a lot easier for a 'non french speaker' to understand the words in this version. she seems to enunciate the words very clearly, where alizee kind of lets them run together...

For some reason, I don't see the video -- just a blank white box. So I looked it up on Youtube and watched it there, and you're right, Brad, Alizée puts the original to shame! Let's just hope that other singers don't get wise to this -- they might not allow Alizée to cover their songs anymore b'cuz she always outperforms the originals!

Yeah, it's the Corsican accent that does it. They combines more words than other French people. You can easily hear it on Alizée's on songs, too. And when she speaks. She's just lovely !

Btw, I can upload HQ video of this if someone is interested.

If I understand correctly, she's singing about Ella Fitzgerald.

You do understand correctly, Ella elle l'a roughly translates to Ella she's got it, and that Ella is Ella Fitzgerald.

hi everybody, Brad has posted the translation already. I quote from him:

It is like a cheerfulness
It is like a smile
Something in the voice
That seems to say "come" to us
That makes us feel oddly well

It is like the complete history
Of the black people
That sways
Between love and despair
Something that dances in you
If you have it, you have it

Ella, she has it
That something
That others don't have
That puts us in a happy state
Ella, she has it
Ella, she has it
Ou-ou ou-ou ou-ou ou...
She has,...ou-ou..., this curious voice
She has,...ou-ou..., this curious joy
This gift from the sky that makes her pretty

Ella, she has it
Ella, she has it
She has, ou-ou...
Ella, she has it
She has, ou-ou...

She has this little more in the soul
This undefinable charm
This little flame

Tap on barrels
On pianos
On everything that God can put between your hands
Show your smile or your sorrow
But whether you have nothing, whether you are king
Whether you are still looking for the powers within you
You see, that can't be bought
When you have it, you have it

Ella, she has it
That something
That others don't have
That puts us in a happy state
Ella, she has it
Ella, she has it...

Thanks brad!

So true, rwd716.

It's simply a lovely song. As Brad said, "it is a lot easier for a 'non french speaker' to understand the words in this version. she seems to enunciate the words very clearly, where
Alizée kind of lets them run together..."

Alizée just puts her lovely Corsican spin on her version, like RMJ said.

Here's an interesting Wiki read on France Gall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France_Gall), another popular French singer.
"In 1988 Gall topped the pop charts in many countries with Ella, elle l'a ("Ella has it"), a Berger tribute to Ella Fitzgerald."
