View Full Version : Corsica has the highest murder rate in Europe

Alizee_is_Scottish!

Not quite the paradise it is made out to be then? (Although probably still 1/10 that of the US :p)

"Since 2007 there have been 105 assassinations of which less than 10% have resulted in a conviction. Assassinations have been happening at a rate of between 20 and 25 per year for a decade.

When you consider the size of the population - just over 300,000 - and take into account those who die in domestic violence, this amounts to Europe's highest murder rate."

Yup , Corsica has always been known in France for being the perfect place to hide for criminals , in the widely known "Maquis " . But as far as Lili's family is concerned the corsican mafia targets mostly merchants, rich farmers and law enforcement services. But as AiS said, this is still much much lower than the american average and ridiculously low compared to Detroit.

I thought corsica is a beautiful and peaceful island...

from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsican_mafia
"The Corsican mafia is one of the most influential organized crime structures in France, also active in many African, Russia and Latin American countries."

that is really scary :fear:

If you said that to non alizée fans they'll definitely think you're talking about Napoleon .:D

No seriously, the french government has managed to destroy the core of the terrorist groups but still is spending millions every year to fight the mafia ... It's not France's fault ,we should rather put the blame on napoli's proximity and the many Sicilians installed in the north of corsica... and Monaco that buys lots of the drug that transit through corsica... :/

With Corsica being an Island and having a relatively small population of 320K residents it wouldn't be that hard to kick the Mafia off the Island.
The problem is the authorities don't have the intestinal fortitude to come down as hard as they can on organized crime. They are scared of retaliations on their families so they look the other way and act like they doing something with lip service.

If the French Government brought in a 1,000 person task force from the main land made up of 150 man heavily armed assault force similar to the FBI's own HRT unit, and 850 forensic accountants they would have the Island cleaned up of the Mafia in three to five years. Just do an audit of the finances of every business on the Island and the finances of any French resident that has bought property on the Island worth over 100,000€ in the last ten years.

Remember the Chicago mobster Al Capone was taken down for not paying income taxes, never for the murders he or people around him carried out. You really think the cover businesses the Corsican mob owns that are being used to launder money through are really paying all the French taxes they owe?

The separatists are a much larger problem and are not going to be easily over come.

Dude , first of all , even though the population is quite small, the island offers plenty of space to hide , secondly France has already tried flexing the muscles of the special police force units...

If you could snap your fingers and make the international drug trade stop, the world economy would most certainly collapse pretty soon.

I was talking strictly about dealing with the organized crime business in my post. Like I said at the end the separatist movement is not going to an easy fix. That is going to a long term problem for the authorities on Corsica.

If there is no way for the mob to launder their ill gotten gains from drugs, gambling, and prostitution through businesses and banks on the Island they are not going to stick around. They'll take their business to a more hospitable location away from prying eyes of the French Government.

The mob are not the ones living in the small towns and villages up in the mountains.

The guy in the water in the top left corner, and the 3rd from the left on the top, are both using a Swiss assault rifle, with an American made holosight. As does the woman. Not to mention that the caliber in which the FAMAS is chambered for (5.56x45mm NATO) was designed and developed in America.

One of the soldiers below the top left guy is using an American firearm. It looks like a jacked up M16 I believe, with a 100 round Beta Mag (also American).

I may be mistaken, but I believe the guy on the jet ski is wearing Oakley goggles. Also American.

Guns owned by the United States Armed Forces and Law Enforcement, Four Million.

Guns Owned by the American Public, Three Hundred and Twenty Million and climbing.

Number of guns sold in the United States between November 1st and December 31st 2012 would be enough to arm the military forces of both China and Russia. :D

65 million guns have been sold between Feb 1st 2009 and today. Who says the President of the United States isn't the greatest salesman in history.

Think about it, in the last four years we bought enough guns to give every person in France a gun. :)

Sorry, it's not much of a story. I've got a relative who works there, not with any of the Mars stuff. Actually I don't know what the project is since it's not discussed. Some kind of proprietary R&D. I'm nowhere near there, I'm on the east coast. But family met out in SoCal for Thanksgiving that year and we went over for a short little tour one morning. The facility is situated on a hillside for the most part, and looks a lot like a college campus. There is a small museum where models and replicas of probes and landers are displayed. There is a viewing gallery above the work room where the rover was being assembled and we saw that, workers doing science right there before our eyes. I forget the proper term, but the crane that lowered the rover was also in the room, off to the side. The only other thing I really remember was that we went to the mission control building to see if we could get into the viewing gallery for that. My relative wasn't sure if the key card would open the door, but it did, and then wasn't sure if visitors were really supposed to be in there. But we got in and peeked down. There wasn't much activity that day, I suppose it was just a few people monitoring routine activities. We figure the access was logged somewhere but nothing ever came of it. Some family members are older and climbing the hills and stairs was getting to them so we called off the rest of the tour.

Like I said, not much of a story. I wish I could remember more such as 'this building is where such and such happened/was built/designed.' I think one relative took some photos, I'll ask if they have them and maybe I'll get some posted sometime.

They definitely seem to have more than their fair share. About a month ago, I noticed an article on FB where someone posted an article about the high rate of violence against women in Corsica. I did a little research and found out it was more than what happens in Chicago in this country which is saying a lot. Unfortunately in my attempts to revisit the article, I couldn't find it, but I'll keep looking.
