How about we have a Photo Location Puzzle thread?!?

I know a few other members enjoy trying to find where photos were taken from.

Here is one for you to locate. Of course, it's in Ajaccio.

Happy hunting!

Tough one, but I know what part of town that Rue resides based on the geography. Give me some time to nail it down. At work and busy so it might take me a little while to pin point it. :)

Take your time :) But someone else just might beat you to the prize. :dontknow:

To make sure the first challenge would be do-able, I located the place before I posted. It is a little tricky though if you use the same tool I used due to those trees.

And perhaps whoever solves it first might post the next challenge. Or not. I can always find something to use.

Just saw this. I usually do not look at off topic but I did today for some reason.

Photographer was using a telephoto lens and was standing at
41.9178° 8.7393°
Looking NorthWest. :)

Might have been standing outside: Napoleon's natal home

Edit:

OK. Two questions:
1. Where is this?
2. What event involving Alizée happened here?

The next picture is one of my favorites.

This question is only for members who joined AFTER Jan 1st, 2014.
3. When was this picture taken?
(Note: I won't ask specifically where. That would be too tough.)

Bravo Rev!

Well, your first photo I recognized right away as the place someone got l'ochju. So I'll pass on that and let someone else work on it.

The second I also remember well, and as I don't qualify to answer the question, I decided to locate the site. (I couldn't help myself.)

Knowing the approximate area and the time of day that photo was taken, I observed the shadows cast by the sun and decided on a direction to use for my search.

First I started with this photo:
You can see the rue there in the center leading straight away up the slight hill.

Anyway, that's Boulevard Sylvestre Marcaggi.

ALS - Thanks. :)

Ray4AJ - Excellent! Talking about hitting it out of the ballpark.
How do you know about l'ochju, and how did you know someone had gotten it (I had not heard that - or at least I don't remember it)?

Have you read Dorothy Carrington's book?

I thought questions 1 & 2 might be too easy, you never know what people will remember.

OK. Although while I am hoping that someone will actually answer questions 1-3, I think you have earned the right to post the next puzzle. :)

Have you read Dorothy Carrington's book?

I suppose the general term (in English) is something I've heard randomly through the years. I had not heard of Dorothy Carrington or her books until today, but I will probably look into them. Before Alizée came along, I borrowed fiction (mostly spy and detective) CDs from my local library and listened to them during my commute. I still do sometimes when I'm not listening to Alizée songs. (sorry Alizée!) One of them was The English Girl by Daniel Silva. The story begins in Corsica and the main character visits a powerful 'olive grower' that he knows to get some information. L'ochju and machja are mentioned, the character even interacts with una signadora. Unfortunately, most of the story takes place on the continent. Maybe Silva got some of his information from Carrington's books.

I'll send you a PM with the 'evidence' of l'ochju I mentioned in my earlier post so as not to spoil the puzzle of questions 1&2 from your earlier post. I'm probably not using the term correctly though. And when someone solves either of your puzzles, I'm prepared to present the next one. :thumb:

Okay, well, maybe someone will see those in the post above eventually and try out their skills.

In the meantime... I present my next challenge. It's hard for me to say how difficult it is, I think it might be a little hard to figure out. It's from Alizée's Instagram posts. When she posted it, probably over two years ago, I tried to figure out where it was but I couldn't. I worked on it some today and solved it without much trouble. I used a little bit of science again, thinking about what time of day rainbows usually occur, and where they occur in relation to the sun, so, this got me the direction to 'look' in.

41.55.02.17N - 8.44.21.14E.

Intersection of Boulevard Daniele Casanova and Rue Roi De Rome.

What made it so easy was the white rectangular building in the lower right of the top picture.

Joe and Michelle's home isn't really off limits any more since Alizée moved out.

Plus Alizée and Joe both shot pictures and posted them one up the street and one down the street taken from the front window of their home.

I'd say her present home address is definitely off limits and we need to stay a fair amount of distance away from that one.

We've generally been staying in the area of Ajaccio, but there are no rules per se (for example, puzzle 6). Also, anything taken by Alizée or with her in it would be appropriate, correct Ray? :)

Ray4AJ
09-12-2015, 06:49 PM
I guess the only rule would be to avoid locations involving Alizée's home. Other than that just specify the general town or city of a puzzle so we have a place to start from. I enjoy them when they are photos Alizée posted but that would limit us quite a bit.

And the location of puzzle 6 is considered to be in Ajaccio.

So I see Jo took that photo for #13.

What is Kooples? Is that a place she liked to shop?

Below is another puzzle that should be relatively easy in the Ajaccio area.

For a long time I thought that was the mountain in the background, but I could not final any double diagonal parking (and yes, I did reverse the image). I checked the entire valley. I must simply have missed this location and not realized it. :)

After talking to Rev, I found out I was much too close to the mountain. I had missed Ray's note about it being closer to Ajaccio than the lake. So I'm crying uncle!

If Rev has officially given up, I'd like to ask some questions about the solution and I did look at all the pictures Ray posted links for.

When this photo first came out, I was very curious to know where it was, but early attempts to find it were very futile.

So when I saw this picture puzzle Ray posted, I was eager to find it. At first glance I saw the light in the ground which first had me thinking "restaurant" but she was by herself apparently and with the dog so I quickly shelved that idea. I quickly focused on the small van I guess it is behind her and it's hard to say for sure, but I thought it looked like it might have some type of cage arrangement in it, so I thought that might be a veterinarian's van. I could not make out the name on the side of it. So I did a Google Earth search for vet. Now it showed one a few blocks away, but it did not show there is one at the corner of the very next building in this complex and I "might" have solved the puzzle earlier if a Google Earth search had showed one here, but I was surprised from the picture that it turned out to be such a big complex which I wasn't looking for. I also wonder if that's why Alizée was there; to see the vet.

When you see that the window she took the picture in was that of a bank, you first think she was doing banking business there. But this bank is on the opposite side of Ajaccio from where she lives, over 3 miles from her house and you would think there'd be a more convenient one for her to go to so I'm still wondering if she went to see this vet. Of course there were a number of businesses here, anyone of which she might have been going to, or she might have been visiting a friend in the area and stopped at the bank to fill up,but a vet kind of makes sense for the reason she might go to a location that while not a great distance from her place is still somewhat out of the way.

When I first checked Ray's solution, I had a lot of problems with the scale I guess you call it. It looked to me like the houses across the street were much closer and the street did not look to be any where near as wide as it is. Good lessons I guess for future puzzles. I did have the right angle off the mountain, but was three miles off in distance.

Of course I'm probably reading way too much into this, but for the next few weeks, I got nothing better to do.
Does anyone have any idea what she's holding in her lower hand?

Um, er, well.... I happen to already have a photo I got from Scruffy a while back that sort of gave away the place. I tried to resist the impulse to use it but in the end I couldn't help it. So I disqualified myself for that puzzle. I had been looking further west though with no success.

Assuming this is Ajaccio, with all these high rises so close together it's gotta be downtown within a mile of the square. The building on the left looks to have a very distinct shape to it's roof and the building the picture was taken from looks to be modern. I also noticed a faint line that goes horizontally between the two buildings way on the right side that I thought might be the sea, but no luck in my search. Can someone throw me a bone.

It's identified as being Ajaccio in the post. I'd say look more towards the Mufraggi dance place area than the citadel. Also you can't quite get to the location in Google Street view but you could drive a car there.

Scruffydog777

I'll write a real quicky history. It's called the Château de La Punta. There was a palace in Paris, right next door to the Louvre museum. It was burnt down by the Paris commune after the disastorous loss by Napoleon III to the Russians.
Then here are following quotes;
When in 1882 it was decided to raze the stone left standing of the Tuileries Palace burned during the Commune in 1871, all in the Picart was acquired by Achille demolition contractor for the sum of 33,000 francs to the charge "in wholesale or retail," butchering in which dispersed the elements.

Thus the Duke Pozzo di Borgo Jerome and his son, Count Charles, Charles-André descendants, one of the great enemies of Napoleon 1st, made the acquisition of more jackpot flag of the former palace in order to build a castle on the Corsican family estate located in Alata, near Ajaccio.
Loose stones and raised by architect Albert Vincent Franklin was crated and shipped by railway to Marseille, then convoyed by boat to Ajaccio; this uncle's fortune allowed to fund a company which required in order to deliver the materials to the place chosen, digging into the rock of a road seven kilometers.

I guess it's been inhabited for many years. As Ray mentioned it suffered a fire which damaged the roof. That damage was letting more water in over the years causing more damage. It was bought by some faction of the Corsican government. The roof was repaired which stopped any on going damage, but I guess it's still in need of major renovation.

I'll bet at the time there were no trees between this chateau and Ajaccio and that must've been a spectacular view.

I've been trying to find an old photo from this location that I've seen before but haven't been able to locate this evening. This will have to do.

And I just realized something interesting (to me) about this location.

So Ray, do you know where that location is or you do not know?
Where did you get this picture from, and what interesting did you realize about this location?

Oh, yes. I know where this is and how Alizée is involved. :D That is how I was able to go on Google Earth to get the image I posted. I don't want to reveal the details so soon in case others want to try to solve the puzzle themselves. There exists another image that I think is a paparazzi photo but I haven't been able to find it again.

I think you are right! #again

Ok, thank you for that, let the puzzle challenge continues. :)
I know where are those paparazzi photos, so if anyone want I can post the link to them.

Is this in Ajaccio or at least Corsica?

No.

Yes, it is "city of light", but I'm not sure if it was shot at this location.

I edited my long speech about this, just suffice to say I don't recognize it and there seems to be little to go on in the picture itself, especially for a big city.

Now this is something that interests me because I work in aviation and I'm a ww2 history buff. If nobody else is interested, so be it. It's something I want to find out myself. A few days ago, Jo Jacotey posted a picture of a good looking young woman in front of an old radial aircraft engine. At the time I asked where it was from. I found my answer very soon when I scrolled down and saw he had posted a few other recent pictures.
I asked Jo about the pictures as I have done with other pictures he's posted, but was surprised by the fact that this time he actually answered me. He said this was an engine from a B17 engine and it turns out it had been retreived from the sea and it was at a Corsican air museum. After not being able to find it the museum on line, I asked where it was and he said it was closed. I don't know if he meant closed for the season or more likely permanently closed.
So the main thing I'm wondering is was this picture of the enging taken inside or outside. I think it was outside and I'd like to find it. I think this should be simple, but I'm not sure.

Edit:

I found this info on the wreck;

The wreck of the B17 plane is one of the legendary wrecks along the Corsican shores. A.k.a. 'The Flying Fortress', this 32m wingspan over 22m length American Bomber had 4 engines and 13 machine-guns; it could cover up to 3200 km on a single trip. This very one, skippered by Lieutenant Charplik, is one of 4750 lost during WWII... On the 14th of February 1944, it takes off with 10 men aboard en route to bomb out the railway system in Verona, Italy; a squadron of German Messerschmitt 109 planes engages combat on the way. Serioulsy damaged by the fight, it lost 3 machine guns and changed its course for Calvi, with only 2 engines running. Eventually it is forced to a sealanding and only 6 members of crew are rescued.
Today the wreck rests 27 meters down, on a sandy bottom, at the foot of the old city of Calvi. As you descend onto the plane, a clear picture of its massive size emerges: it lies flat with the two wings and the 4 engines still attached, in good conditions. The tail has disappeared, providing a way to look at the inside of the cabin, along with the cockpit, still intact with the instruments and the pilot seats! Check out the engines, though a few parts and blades have been removed by metal scrappers, or just damaged and lost on impact... Some conger and moray eels have settled down in the wreck, and a few groupers and wrasses swim around!

I found a youtube video from 2013 that shows the wreck of the B17 mentioned above and in it, it looks like all 4 engines are there. They say this site is a memorial and people aren't supposed to remove parts of it, but they say they still have problems with people taking pieces of it, so even though it's possible an engine has since been removed, I think the engine in the first picture is from another B17 or could have even been a spare.

Edit:

Going back to the first 3 pictures I posted; one was of what looked to be a small plane that you typically find in civil aviation. It had 3 models surrounding it wearing nomex uniforms such as the one when I was with a Dustoff unit. The nomex of course is fireproof. They obviously borrowed them for the shoot. I tried to look at the uniform patches to try and get a unit id off them but the pictures weren't detailed enough.

It then hit me like a ton of bricks. On a trip to Ajaccio where I flew in, I saw some twin engine planes on the other side of the field that were painted I know in mostly yellow. I'm not sure if they had red. They looked to me like either water bombers for fire fighting or crop dusting or something. I'll have to look through my pictures to see if I might have taken one.

EDIT: Found the picture; So it was in Ajaccio. These planes were on the opposite side of the runway and to the left.

Found close up pictures of these planes and they look like they are seaplanes. It must be maybe like a civil air patrol for ships in trouble or a coast guard?

The image below shows the ground floor, and the upper image shows the upper floors. Keep in mind that this is the current image of that location on Google. But in the past it looked somewhat different, and that can be also seen on Google if you select that option.

Where is this?
How it was related to Alizée?

As I've said before, I don't believe I've seen this picture before this thread or at least never paid any attention to it. But just last night, I watched this Youtube video and it reminded me of this thread. If it is the right place, it's gone through quite a bit of change. I still don't exactly know the significance of this picture, but after watching another video by the same poster, that showed the area where Alizée used to live in Corsica, I think I have a pretty good guess.

Yes, and they get a lot of use during the summer.
