I've been a fan of Alizee for years, but she's not the only French artist that I love.

Jean Michel Jarre is one of my favorite composers, and I like Daft Punk as well (Not their "Random Access Memories" album though, that was garbage).
For people who don't know his name, I'm sure you've heard his most famous track, "oxygene IV" before:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DDEl7JnWvo
:scrunch::scrunch:
Bear in mind this was made in the 1970s in his kitchen (!). Way before Moby, way before widely used personal computers. Everything you hear is made from analogue synthesizers and recorded onto tapes, which adds a lot of charm in my opinion.

Honorable mentions:
Yiann Tiersen (Amelie OST)
Sebastien Tellier (Somewhere OST)
Mylene Farmer (Alizee's early lyricist, singer/songwriter, the "Madonna of France")

Whom do you also enjoy? It can be modern French artists or oldies but goodies like Francoise Hardy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pQJkcAY-mo

Feel free to post tracks too, I'd love to learn more about French musicians, any genre.

Actually, I had my first exposure to Jean Michel Jarre in 1986. I was living in Houston, TX at the time. He had a concert that used Houston's futuristic skyline (at that time) as a backdrop for his special effects. It was a really big deal for the city and I became a fan of his afterward.

I can't believe they actually had a YouTube video of it.

Speaking of other French singers, I found out from an Instagram post by Ske Leton that the video for this years Les Enfoires show will be aired on TF1 tonight at 9pm Paris time. It's 1:30 on the east coast and 7:30 in Paris, so that's in about 1 1/2 hours. It probably wont be viewable in this country, but I'll take a peek just in case. Unfortunately Alizee wont be in it, but the odds for next year have gone up quite a bit recently.

I'm not sure about next year... Their old place was only two bedrooms (as best I can figure) so if they moved it could be to be closer to the studio, or because they need more space. :13: #rayspeculation

Edit:

I was reading an article this morning about the broadcast and like most articles about this year's Les Enfoires production, they pointed out that Alizée was missing. I think it's a Tele Losoirs article.

Edit:

Okay, here it is. https://www.telestar.fr/actu-tv/les-enfoires-2018-tele-star-a-vu-le-show-325835

I certainly enjoyed the shows when he was a part of it. It be great if she did participate. Of course her not being in the Tounée doesn't guarantee she'll be in it. A number of things could come up (pitter patter). So I'm not going to let my hopes get too high.

I just saw an article where this years Les Enfoires show had it's worst rating since 2000. That might be the reason for the rumors of JJG coming back, though there were other factors.

Edit:

I chatted with Tapetor, the German fan I had mentioned before. He is from Germany and I believe he will try and get me some of the fan videos from Les Enfoires that were taken down for copyright violations.

Here's one that wasn't from his YT channel....

I listen a lot to an Internet radio station called Radio Paradise. It is owned and run by a man who is a former DJ, and it was originally based in Paradise, CA USA. They were fortunate enough to relocate before the terrible fire in 2018 which has been called the "Camp Fire" destroyed about 95% of the town. It was the worst wildfire in California history, and the worst in the US in over 100 years.
Radio Paradise plays really eclectic mix of music, and they are entirely sponsored by listener donations.
I highly recommend looking them up and giving them a try. I have discovered so many terrific artists and music I never heard of before. They also play old favorites and even some classical music, but they rarely play "top 20" type pop hits.
It's a good station because they don't just stick to one genre, so it doesn't get tiring.

Yesterday I heard them playing this song, and I really like the sound, so I looked it up. It is a singer named Zaz, and the song is called "Si jamais j'oublie."

I don't know how many of you are fans of Claudine Longet. She was married to Andy Williams. I always thought she was beautiful, and that her voice had a lovely, attractive quality. This song, "Long Long Time" was written by Gary White. The most well known version of the song was by Linda Ronstadt, who had a hit with it in 1970, and, because of her performance of it, she nominated for a Grammy in 1971. I do love Claudine Longet's rendition, however.

I had such a crush on her when I was younger. Even seeing images of her now makes my heart skip a beat. She didn't have the strongest voice in my opinion but was so beautiful and charming.

I didn't realize she sang this song, but I have to admit, I love Linda Ronstadt's version more.

This is a song I have loved since I was a kid. I used to play it on the piano, and I memorized the lyrics in both French and English. It was recorded on 1963 by Jeannine Deckers, a Belgian nun called “Souer Sourire”—-“The Singing Nun.” I think she has a great voice, and the song is just lovely.

It’s about Saint Dominique. Below are the lyrics in French & in English from "songfacts.com," and a Wikipedia article about the song, as well as an article from "allmusic.com" about her life and the sad way it ended.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10mMDtpfcQM&feature=youtu.be

From Wikipedia:

Dominique" is a 1963 French language popular song, written and performed by the Belgian female singer Jeannine Deckers, better known as Sœur Sourire or The Singing Nun. The song is about Saint Dominic, a Spanish-born priest and founder of the Dominican Order, of which she was a member (as Sister Luc-Gabrielle).[2] The English-version lyrics of the song were written by Noël Regney.[3] In addition to French and English, Deckers recorded versions in Dutch, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese.
It was a top selling record in 11 countries in late 1963 and early 1964...
...The song won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel or Other Religious Recording (Musical) in 1964.[6] It was also a nominee for Grammy Award for Record of the Year, and Sœur Sourire was a nominee for Best Female Vocal Performance... It was the second foreign language song to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1963, the first being "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto. For the next ten years or so, although there were a number of hits with most of the vocals in a language other than English (e.g., The Sandpipers' "Guantanamera", René y René's "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero", etc.), no other purely foreign language song reached the Billboard Hot 100's top 40 until the Spanish language hit "Eres tú (Touch The Wind)" in 1974."Dominique" outsold Elvis Presley during its stay on the Billboard Hot 100; it was the second to last No. 1 hit before the British Invasion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique

From AllMusic.com:

The Singing Nun, an unassuming member of a Belgian religious order who was also known as Soeur Sourire, hit the top of the music charts with a song about St. Dominic, who established the Dominicans. The Singing Nun, whose real name was Jeanine Deckers, sang "Dominique" in both English and French. The single relegated the Kingsmen and their "Louie Louie" to the number two spot.

Sister Luc-Gabrielle, who entered the religious order in 1959, penned "Dominique" and recorded it and a few of her other compositions for personal release only, mainly to be used as gifts. When the Philips Record Company discovered her potential appeal, they offered the nun a contract and christened her Soeur Sourire. To American audiences she was the Singing Nun. She did not actively seek fame, although she sang for Ed Sullivan's television program in 1964 via tape. Live performances did not appeal to her, and in fact even the taped broadcast was almost blocked by her Mother Superior. She underscored her aversion for the limelight in 1967 by releasing the album I Am Not a Star.

Her successful single did not endear her to the Dominicans' Mother Superior, who viewed the popular song as "impertinent." It probably didn't help matters when MGM based a musical on her life in 1965 and cast "Debbie Reynolds" as a moped-riding nun who was romantically drawn to Chad Everett. That same year, the Singing Nun withdrew from the public eye and gave up her burgeoning musical career. By 1966, she had a complete change of heart, returned to music, and quit the convent. After the release of I Am Not a Star, her music tackled controversial subjects. "The Golden Pill" concerned the issue of birth control pills, of which she was in favor and the Pope condemned. Together with a woman named Annie Pescher in Belgium, she founded a school for children who suffered from the disability of autism.

Unfortunately, her previous success in music did not bring lasting happiness. In fact, it added to her troubles. The Singing Nun and Pescher took their lives in 1985 with a combination of pills and alcohol when the government ordered her to pay back taxes amounting to more than 60,000 dollars which accrued from her time as a singer and recording artist. The demand, which put their school in jeopardy, came despite the fact that the Singing Nun had given all profits to her order.

ENGLISH LYRICS

Dominique, nique, nique, over the land he plods along
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord

At a time when Johnny Lackland
Over England was the King
Dominique was in the backland
Fighting sin like anything

Now a heretic, one day
Among the thorns forced him to crawl
Dominique with just one prayer
Made him hear the good Lord's call

Without horse or fancy wagon
He crossed Europe up and down
Poverty was his companion
As he walked from town to town

To bring back the straying liars
And the lost sheep to the fold
He brought forth the Preaching Friars
Heaven's soldier's, brave and bold

One day, in the budding Order
There was nothing left to eat
Suddenly two angels walked in
With a loaf of bread and meat

Dominique once, in his slumber
Saw the Virgin's coat unfurled
Over Frairs without number
Preaching all around the world

Grant us now, oh Dominique
The grace of love and simple mirth
That we all may help to quicken
Godly life and truth on earth

I remember that song well and really enjoyed it. I was only 10 when it first came out. Back then we didn't have internet and there was little a youngster could do to research a song or an artist. I didn't know who Saint Dominic was and I'm sure until today I didn't know what the lyrics were but this song was just another thing that endeared me to the French language, of course mainly when it was being spoken or in this case sung by a French woman.

I thought she was from France, but this says she was born in Belgium, what it didn't say was Saint Dominic although born in Spain, set up his order in Toulouse, France and it was there that she joined his Order and became a French nun.

I also remember a movie back from that era, well actually there's only a little I remember about it. I think it was a comedy about an astronaut and if my memory serves me correctly there was a beautiful woman who I believe was supposed to be from another planet, but she had a beautiful French accent.

Mon Cœur (My Heart)

My heart
It is necessary that I dare
Tell you one thing
I am a bit afraid
My heart
When he touches me
It is just above my skin
Just above my heart

Oh my heart
Feeling this desire
Oh it is shameless
It makes me blush
But it is sweet and strong
It is tearing at my body
And my heart
As an exquisite pain

This is my first desire
That of my 15 years
This is a storm that is tearing
My body of a child
Or oh oh oh, my heart
This is my first desire
Between violence and gentleness
Stronger than when you die
Trouble in my body
In my heart
The child awakens
15 years is the age of sunlight
This is the age of wonders
Oh oh oh oh
It is the awakening of the senses
The storm which capsizes us
15 years is the age when our childhood
Must end

Oh my heart
I am no longer the same
Since I love
You know it by my heart

But I dare not
I do not love
Not yet

Y'a pas que les grands qui rêvent

On the window the rain streams
The earth appears so beautiful to me
I give this storm to the desert
The eternal snow on Cairo
I offer the gardens of Babylon
To this boy for whom my heart shivers
Don't grow too quickly, wait for me
I know that one day, you will come to me

Grown-ups are not the only ones that have dreams
Grown-ups are not the only ones that have feelings
I would like him to kiss me on the lips
not as a child
Grown-ups are not the only ones that have dreams
Grown-ups are not the only ones that have feelings
Its like a childhood that's reaching its end
In an ocean

He teaches me the names of the stars
From the top of the cathedrals
He plays the music of the hope
His piano cries of ivory tears
I feel the caress on my wrist
Of the Brazilian bracelet he gave me
By saying "when it will break
Then your dream will be realized"

And I await you
And I await you

There's no one else she reminds me of. Though there are times in this movie she looks very good and I was certainly smitten at the time, looking back, I wouldn't put her at the top in the looks department.

So this movie came along in 1962

The song Dominique came along in 1963

Claudine Longet came along in 1964. Here is an episode of the tv show "Combat" where I thought she had a fair resemblance to Alizée.

As far as I know, I have no other "musical contacts" in France and will hardly come. :w:

I've been trying to listen to some, but I just don't like... :fear:

Which is maybe a little weird because I like French as a voice... :p

And as everyone knows about Alizée, :p:p:p:p but for me France :france::yahoo::scrunch::sstruck::agree:= Alizée!!!! :p:p:p:p

Thanks for this, Okaberintarou! By the way, if you would like your YouTube link to show in your forum post as a window rather than a link, you can just remove the "s" after "http" in the link.

I had first heard this song from the 2011 Les Enfoirés show. Alizée was one of the participants pretending to be a part of the orchestra.

I really like both versions of the song.

In the Les Enfoirés show, the singers were Patrick Fiori, Nolwenn Leroy, Pascal Obispo and Tina Arena. All four know Alizée well.

Here is a short excerpt from the story of Mozart Rock Opera and the song "l'Assasymphonie" from Wikipedia.

If anyone would like to read more, here is the link:

"However, as Rosenberg exits, Salieri is conflicted about his actions, acknowledging again that Wolfgang's music is sublime. He laments his inability to compare with Wolfgang's talent despite dedicating himself to his music day and night, and, driven nearly to madness with jealousy and impending guilt, Salieri attempts to commit suicide (l'Assasymphonie). He fails to do so, however, and ultimately lives to see the fruition of his plans."

Here is an interview where Alizée and Nolwenn Leroy talk about what it's like to participate in Les Enfoires. The video and the subtitles were supplied by Bigdan, a member of our Alizée America forum. I couldn't find his on YT so I reuploaded it myself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MQ-SC9bmp4I admit I am woefully ignorant of foreign singers; being like captive to the american kind somehow; so I will have to catch up to all of you ! All of these girls are cute and Beautiful; so I am afraid I might fall in love with all of them !
Anyway I had been watching the old movie Casablanca; so I wanted a good version of La Marseillaise and I found it with

Thank You Bamagirl ! I read up on her on wiki afterwards. She was kindof raised in poverty and pulled herself up by her bootstraps; but she always had her voice. Probably got taken advantage of by some promoters who stole some of her money; so then she employed her sisters as her managers after that. Took care of her family and bought them a house ! Originally left-handed but in school back then if the teacher saw you write left handed she would smack your hand with a ruler ! ( same as my mother in school the teacher would point to numbers on the blackboard they had to add or subtract and if you didn't get it she would smack your hand with a ruler ! ) It was a different type of school in those days; very strict !
Like Alizee; she would seem to have had some acting training as she doesn't just sing the song she acts it ! Unless it is a natural ability; as very intelligent !
Nice to talk to you again ! Being a somewhat fanciful writer; you will perhaps pardon me if I imagine you as Cute and Beautiful as Alizee ! But I don't mean to offend or make you mad; as it is just my writer self coming out; so then maybe you will forgive me ! Ha !
