View Full Version : History of AA

I thought about it, i.e. the history of AA, because I’ve tried to read quite a few old posts here, but I still haven’t gotten a proper idea of where it all started! :13:
There may not be many first year users here anymore, but some of you American users will probably have more detailed information on this topic ...
So... :13: Where did it all start and how did Alizée become so famous in the United States too, that this AA, which still exists and is undoubtedly Alizée’s most famous fan brand in the world, was originally founded at all?:o:p
And, of course, a general discussion about the history of this forum and Alizée’s cultural impact and influence on the United States...?:):bye:

I suggest you send a pm to Ben. He owns the server and is probably the one who has been here the longest that you can relatively easy get in touch with him. I believe he took over this site from someone else.
He could be a busy man, so I suggest you ask him for a "brief" history of how this place got started.

I don't know about how the forum was founded, but I think the majority of Alizee's fans in the U.S. discovered her via youtube.
And, of course, a general discussion about the history of this forum and Alizée’s cultural impact and influence on the United States...?:):bye:
Alizee has had zero impact on American culture. I would estimate that, at present, only 1 out of 500 Americans know who Alizee is.

Thanks for the tip Scruffy!:bye:
I'm was also thinking about that youtube option,:) but it was founded "only" 2005 and around the same time this AA... :13:
So of course there is no wide-ranging impact, but the impact is a fact when e.g. this forum has been created and many members were immediately found in the united states etc!
:D :oFor some reason, many North Americans suddenly found Alizeé, even though she wasn’t marketed there, for which this AA is strong proof! :)(: Things like this are interesting to consider and try to figure out! :thumb:

I think this forum and the Alizée forum were kind of joined at the hip in the manner that the ones who were part of that forum, started this forum. They had very similar structures. Ben I'm quite sure was a member of AF, so was I and several of our members back then had dual citizenship in a forum kind of way.
The main difference in our forum was they had forums for different languages which of course being in Europe, was something they needed.
They were a much bigger forum than us but they are gone now and though we've gone through some very slow times, we've managed to hang on.

Speaking of forums, are there any other "forums" dedicated to Alizee? The youtube channels "elle Alizee" and "le nid d'Alizee" come to mind (is there one individual or multiple individuals behind each channel? Does anyone know who they are?)
It would be interesting to compile a list of all the extant forums, facebook pages, instagram accounts and youtube channels dedicated to Alizee.
(The "major" ones, at least.)

AF
when was the AF forum originally opened, is it known here?:13::13:
Somehow such a global forum was more natural when Alizée’s largest market was Europe, etc.:)
That’s why it’s very great that we fans also have such an American forum and it has such a long history!
Of course... In principle, there can also be, for example, a Russian or even a Chinese forum (less likely), but we do not understand these languages...:fear:

I think the forum's main strength is that it is in English (because English serves as a common language for much of the world.)
The forum really ought to be called "Alizee English" or "Alizee International" (or something like that.)

I think you guys know the story of the private autograph session at the Virgin Megastore back in 2010. I was planning on going to the autograph session. I asked if anyone in the forum would like me to get an autographed cd for them. That guickly grew to 50 requests. The question was, I couldn't walk up to the autograph table, plunk down 50 cds and ask her to sign them. The other people in line would have killed me!
Another member of our forum wrote to Virgin, telling them about our situation. I received a letter from Ben a few days later.
3674
This line bothered me;
"Alizée will kindly sign 50 copies of her new album for her American fans."
Did that mean I couldn't get cds for our foreign members? We've always had foreign members. At that time, MerciAlizee was a very active admin for our forum. In the end, I wasn't going to leave our foreign members out.
So it has bothered me that our name gives people the impression that this site is for American fans, but we've had it for so long, I think it's too late to do anything about it. Besides, I've gotten Alizée to say "hello to Alizée America" four times If she doesn't see out name anymore, she might think we've gone under like other forums have.
Edit:

I have no idea myself, but it would be interesting to find out the answer to all your questions and I'm sure there is a way. We just need someone to take the time. The fact that "Alizee" is in just about all the names should make it easier.

I don't think that part of the message had any sort of intent to it. It was likely written by someone at Sony Music/Jive Epic who was just in the midst of organizing another event for a client, saw the forum name "AlizeeAmerica" and didn't think much else of it.
Not something to read into too much, more than likely a simple misunderstanding.

This is an interesting "problem"! :13:
AA is becoming more and more international and has members around the world... :)(:
Still, Alizée America is also a trusted brand in the Alizée world! :)
In fact, it’s really just one of the only big fan brands today.
And it’s good that we’re active here if, for example, a decent “Alizée Comeback,” would happen someday!
However, that "Alizée International" in Mr C's message is also good.
...
In fact, sometimes somewhere here I “planned”... :p It would be great if, for example, there was a large fan community around AA and the forum had both “international” and “America” forum areas, etc ...!:p:bow::dance::yahoo:

I have to agree with Ben. Since Scruffy was getting the CDs for Alizée America, they probably just assumed it was a home for her American fans. I mean that would be logical from the name of the forum. Why would they seek to exclude fans of Alizée who happened to be not American, I don’t think that was their intention.
I've gotten Alizée to say "hello to Alizée America" four times If she doesn't see out name anymore, she might think we've gone under like other forums have.
Surely Alizée has other things to do than checking on what fan forums she might have? Just guessing but I doubt she has visited this site.

Nor do I think it was anything but a mere assumption... ... So yeah, because the name is AA, so "it's American, of course"!
I am also researching the establishment of AF, and apparently it was founded as early in the early 2000s...
Perhaps through it, the Americans have also partially discovered Alizée and then this AA has finally been established and opened.
But still, I wonder how it has been possible when Alizée practically didn’t market herself there at all! It must also be remembered that at the beginning of the 2000s, many did not yet have the Internet and Youtube was quite different [worse] than it is now!

From Wikipedia:
"YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media platform owned by Google. It was launched in February 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It is the second most visited website, with more than one billion monthly users...who collectively watch more than one billion hours of videos each day...As of May 2019, videos were being uploaded at a rate of more than 500 hours of content per minute."

So Youtube started in 2005. I remember too that "Google videos" was a popular source of music video, maybe more so than YT in the beginning and it may have been through them that I discovered Alizée because their pages had similar set upsl.
Another great source of videos called Napster, saw it's beginning around the same time as Alizée's career did. It opened on June of 1999. You could get just about anything out there as far as audio and video. You knew it was too good to be true and wouldn't last long and they were sued and had to shut down in July of 2001. I wonder if any of Alizée's music made it onto their platform?

Well, what would be the way to get an exact Opening Date? :13::confused:
Probably impossible unless someone who was an active "witness" at the time is here and tell us?
But according to the short study I already did... :)It turned out that as early as March 2001, there was a place for Alizée fans called AF.
So it can be said that very early AF was on the move anyway... :sstruck::thumb:
Given the timing of Alizée’s breakthrough :p and the fact that the internet wasn’t even very widespread yet, at least in Europe in general?:o:)

After doing a search in "Members," searching for for join date, and adding in a range of from 2005-01-01 to 2006-12-30, it looks like the earliest date was 2006-06-06. So, D-Day looks to be the birth date of Alizée America! The fact that it was the join date of "admin" I think proves it.

I think Mr Cocou spoke and meant the Alizée-forum [AF], at least I myself commented on it when it has been discussed a lot in the thread [although the subject is AA :w:].

I see what you are saying about 'admin'; and it looks like a bunch of people joined on 6-15-2006.
But looking at some of the earliest threads, it doesn't look like the actual beginning of the forum. (The members already seem to know one another, there is no discussion about "this wonderful new forum", etc.)
I think the actual beginning was before 6-6-2006.

These all look like Renaud's pages, the gentleman I mentioned yesterday as being maybe the head guy of AF. Though he gave up the forum, it looks like he's still following her. I believe he pulled the plug because of lack of donations. I think their costs were about 100 euros a month. In the end, I was probably the only one making sizable donations to them.

I "dug" a few early pictures... A little different was this AA in the beginning!
Previously, the address was apparently: moi-alizee.us/
These also confirm the opening moment...
In the summer of 2006! :)

The look of 2006 was still quite different...
But in 2007-2008 it will start to look quite familiar...;)

That doesn't seem to be an easy thing to look up. When you're searching under insights, it will only go back 3 years, but I did a search on the best way to do it and someone suggested looking at the profile pictures for the page and when they were created. There were only 2 profile pictures in there, one we just posted recently and the other one was posted on October 17, 2011 so I'm guessing that was the birth of our FB page.

I sent a message to a fan in Mexico who was with us at the autograph session in Paris, asking him about the discovery of Alizee in Mexico. This is what he had to say.
"Alizée had a very strong boom in 2005, which was when I met her thanks to YouTube, but you used to listen to her songs everywhere in Mexico, especially in pirate music stands, at that time Alizée was inactive but there was a lot of promotion of her albums, I even did a promo in the streets so that more people would know Alizée, in 2007 she launched Psychedelices and in Mexico it was a success, everyone was talking about her and there were many forums dedicated to her, I still have videos and photos of those times, in Mexico it was a great one and when he did concerts in Mexico his success grew much more".

^So, however, it seems pretty strong that Youtube has been at least a pretty big "key" to Alizée's global visibility since its opening... :)(::)
Sure, it was probably immediately new and a success compared to that time, even though it was even weaker then than it is today. :13::13:
One can only think if the YT had already existed in 1995, for example, that is, before Alizée's career ... What would have happened then!:p

^At least these can still be found there now, and were even downloaded in early 2006! :):o:bye::bye:
By the way, e.g. this Alizeé video was uploaded to DailyMotion as early as February 1, 2005! (or so Google claims, DM reports it is +15 years old) [:order:In fact, it hadn't even been opened at the time, :Dbut immediately in March 2005=]] [I did not know that this service has been around for so long]! :)(:

Conclusion: The record companies have certainly removed most of the releases released on YouTube in the early years,, back then it was still normal even on youtube, so it’s impossible to say how much Alizée material was available right from the start, but probably more than we can guess - at least immediately since 2006...!? ;) :13:

The exciting thing is that basically the United States seems to have been in a slightly similar situation to Mexico in the early 2000s with Alizée... :13: But Mexico did much better and Alizée’s visibility is much more collective there and throughout South America. :p:bow:
I find it strange that the Alizée is not very well known in Canada, :)(: even though there are large French territories there. Even compare Italian and Spanish regions in the United States, whose music is also more popular there!

I had done some housekeeping a few months ago and got rid of several old cds/dvds that I had stored Alizee video files on, assuming I already had them on my computer, but I found another one today with 40 videos on it. Now it's interesting to look at the "Date modified" dates.
The majority were from the spring of 2005. I hadn't heard of Alizee until 2007.There was one with a date of April 2004 and one of July 2003. I'm quite sure I downloaded these from either Rapidshare or Megaupload. These were the most common links in the Czech data base.
So is it kind of backs up the fact her popularity took off in 2005. It was taking off on file sharing sites at the time, but it was Youtube that brought it onto so many pc's.

From all this it can be deduced... Conclusion... The role of Youtube was clearly large from the beginning, even really big! After all, many (these days) can only become famous precisely through YT or similar social media channels! :)
Admittedly less often in French, but for our Alizée, even that is notoriously not a problem!:p:p:p:p
It’s annoying, very annoying that Youtube came a little late compared to Alizée’s rise!:fear::confused:
Imagine the cult reputation Alizée already owns thanks to Youtube and J'en Ai Marre, among others!;) And in her early years, the golden age, she didn’t get any help from yotube, etc. :nervous:
:yay: I would venture to claim that "En Concert World Tour" etc or the like ;) would have come true easily :yikes:  if youtube had already opened in 2000, for example...:aha::dance:
:order: :order: :o :order: :order:
:thumb:[The Internet, of course, only developed more in the 21st century and beyond, :w::w: so perhaps Alizée should have been born a few years later! :D:D]
:))):)):)):)))
:sstruck::scrunch::agree::clap: :yahoo: Let's even dream of that opportunity! :thumb: :agree: :yahoo: :sstruck::scrunch:

Sorry, just want to add something.

I thought by that time her popularity was already waning. Her debut album and hits like Moi Lolita and L’Alizé were released in 2000. Mes courants électriques was released in 2003. Those were by far her most successful works and brought her almost instant global fame. YouTube was launched in 2005, around the time Alizée paused her career. Of course a new generation has discovered her in this and other ways but I somehow doubt that this matches what it was like in the early 2000s - she was a star of that time. Have I got this right?

The popularity of Alizée in Mexico was almost fully caused by YouTube, especially her La Isla Bonita cover.
And don't forget the popular games, especially World of Warcraft, which was released at the end of 2004, that let people all around the world to discover Alizée and watch her videos and listen to her music. This widened her audience, especially in the USA and Asia.

Where do World of Warcraft Dances Come From? Origins and Inspirations for all the WoW Dance Emotes
Male Night Elves have perhaps the single coolest dance animation in all of World of Warcraft. I know people who have created NE characters simply to be able to bust out their fantastic dance moves. Their dance comes from Michael Jackson’s iconic “Billie Jean” video routine. Jackson’s reputation may have sullied a bit in recent years, but there’s no denying he was one of the greatest superstars of all time.
Perhaps the most popular dance in all of Warcraft, the female Night Elf’s dance moves come from French recording artist Alizée. Specifically, the dance comes from a performance of her song “J’en ai marre.”

Ashe's dance references J'en ai marre ! by Alizée.

Probably both, :13: the old fans, found Alizée without youtube, of course [because there was no service yet at the time:D], but "all" new fans come mainly thanks to youtube. :)
I think YT made Alizée a global cult artist, :p:p:p:p which would hardly have been possible otherwise, because Alizée's original career "stopped" pretty quickly... :w:
^Mexico, mentioned by Alizee-Nederland, is a good example. :agree:

I did a bit of research :coffee: and was also looking for the first picture of the Alizée forum [AF] and it is already the beginning of 2003!:snack:

And by the way, it's a PHPBB forum! :yahoo::dance::thumb:
Or, in fact, AF seems to have existed right from the beginning of 2001, :aha: but on a more rudimentary platform.:sstruck:
I also asked in a Finnish discussion how Finns remember Alizée's breakthrough, I got zero answers at least so far... :D :order:
It seems that Alizée was not very well known in Finland before, :13: it was maybe more Moi Lolita... song etc... :w:
