View Full Version : Curious about LOL

Do French users type the standard English chat acronyms such as LOL LMAO, BRB, IMHO etc. or are there equivalent French acronyms? The phrase "bye-bye" is pretty much international even in Asia. I'm curious if internet acronyms have reached that same level.

Yes of course. Here they are:

lol is mdr=mort de rire (dead laughing)

I've seen LOL on French forums, but those forums also contain English members and I think aFrenchie posted what the French equivalent was somewhere on this site, but can't remember where. LOL would not make sense for 'laugh out loud' in French other than that it has been adopted from the English. And I have seen c instead of c'est or g instead of j'y (they sound the same when spoken in French) but not to the extent of the way we use LOL LMAO, BRB, IMHO in English.

EDIT: See I knew aFrenchie knew. Thanks for the link :)

Wow, that's quite a list. I don't think I know as many English slangs as there are French slangs listed there, but who knows - I don't really think about it much :-)

Let's see, some common comparisions from French to English...

ama = imo
amha = imho
asv = a/s/l?
bn = gn
dac = k
dpdr = btdt
expldr = rotflol
fdp = sob
ftg = stfu
j're = bak
lu = yo
mci = thx
mdr = lol
mp = pm
pg = nb
stp/svp = plz/pls
tah = ttfn

This was actually pretty interesting. Do you actually use most of the on the wiki one aFrenchie because I have seen some sites that show english ones with some I have never used or ever seen used. I was just wondering because I have some French buddies from games I know and if I used one they have never seen it might look stupid lol. Might be better not to because my French isn't that good then I would just have to explain why I did it. Anyway I guess you can still answer my question if you want to lol. :p Oh and thanks for taking the time to answer.

go to fr.youtube.com, and read the comments ;)

as for the abbreviations, the only english ones i know are ty, brb, and lol :D but i wouldn't mind if you taught me more. i think french people would welcome it very much if you spoke a little SMS french to them online, but keep it in small quantities until you master the language ;) i highly doubt french people do not know the abbreviations listed. you can try right now with Bigdan :)

tok2mak = toc de mac

I sorta doubt that one, since it's a Corsican expression, and it gets almost no hits on google, even variants.

I was able to understand most of the abbreviations you posted garcon. I have taken 3 years of french in highschool although I still dont think my french is that great since the teacher had to teach more than just me, but I made a A all 3 years lol. I have made some french friends in online games and can sometimes get what they type in french when talking to other french people lol. Anyway since you were so nice to teach me some french abbreviations garconcanadien, here are some more english ones I or some of my friends use quite a bit.

ppl = people

afk = away from keyboard

ttyl = talk to you later

OMG = oh my god

FTW = For The Win

FTL = For The Lose

IRL = In Real Life

Bio = short for "biological" i.e. (in example) taking a bathroom break

atm = at the moment

omw = on my way

Thats about all I can think of right now lol. Most of mine I learned from years of playing online games. So would just have to google something like gamer slang to learn more.
