Lee Hyori, Queen of Kpop.

So I figured I'm going to do this anyways, so why put it off?

:p

I'll just start off with the usual video. Shows pictures of Lee Hyori from childhood to now.

(Not sure how long this thread will be alive, I'm not quite a hardcore fan of Hyori..)

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/B14FR-eKZIU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/B14FR-eKZIU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This interview is about Lee Hyori and what she's really like, and how she got where she is and all.

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/14z42BBzXmc&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/14z42BBzXmc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

I'd like to sub it, but I have no idea how to. Any pointers?

Well it's a start.
You've got a long way :p

K-Pop usually has a bunch of translators, Allkpop's got their team, individual fanbases have their own translators and subbers too.
I used to work as a Soshisubs editor and article translator before I got moved to the Uploading jobs.

If you hunt around you'd find subbed ones, but it's not necessary.

Well, if I know how to sub, it'll be easier.

I can translate Korean fine, so as long as I get the technique down, subbing shouldn't be a problem.

Besides, I don't always agree with the subbing. Sometimes they translate it too literally and don't convey the message correctly.

There's a whole series of this on youtube. It's called Lee Hyori, Off the Record.

And it's basically just seeing Hyori as she is. They have cameras placed in her house, car, and a guy just follows her around with a camera.

Sounds kind of creeperish, but they obviously don't show certain footages.

Here's the first part.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0W9JrKdHG3M&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0W9JrKdHG3M&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The very first scene is NOT of her followers worshiping her! :p
It's a Korean tradition to pay respects to the adults and elderly on the first day of the new year.
After the kids do that, they usually get money. Hence, the kids eagerly moving forward with open hands.

I really like this series because it goes past just the hot and sexy Hyori image and looks more into what she's like.

Surprisingly, from what I've seen so far, she seems to be really really lonely.

EDIT: Oops. Here's the actual first part with English subs.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/R49jZhBBvxM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/R49jZhBBvxM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Most K-pop stars are isolated from most others.
Relationships are pretty much a no-go. Considering the fangirls and fanboys who are more than willing to send...let's see...

Over the years K-pop artists have gotten:
-Love letters written in blood (from neck, wrist, and period)
-Suicide threats from over-obsessive fangirls (no fanboys yet)
-Strange offers or proposals
-Suicide petitions garnering signatures in hopes of the artist to kill themself

Oh and the goodies pile up.

I'm betting two cents Hyori's not lonelyish because she wants to be, but being the image and one of the female faces of her country, and under an Ent. company, it's how she has to be.

Yeah, I've heard of the suicide thing. Freaking weird people out there.
But I don't think that what you wrote up there is just unique to just Kpop stars. I'm sure any popular person in the entertainment industry can be subjected to that.

With Hyori though, she's always talking about finding a good man, getting married, and just living quietly. I don't mean that she just brings it up every now and then, but any chance she gets!

Even on family outing, she repeatedly talked about that. (Sure, the script probably called for it, but still.)

It's kind of sad watching OTR. She's popular as hell, but all she really comes home to is just 2 cats.

I wonder how the bigger groups feel? Like SNSD, they have a huge group that work together, and, I'm assuming, hang out together and stuff. Whereas Hyori is now a single artist.

I remember hearing the phrase "It's lonely at the top", I guess I can see that now.

yeah fandom can go from being something great to being something depressing.

the fans suffer because they are being painted a false pretty picture, but i bet its also hard on the artist. one minute they love you, then you fall out of the picture. i guess that's why its so easy to ignore everything except the money sometimes. -_-
