Trojan warning

A few weeks ago a Norton anti virus window started popping up on my laptop just about every 2 minutes ( a little less than that actually), saying Norton has blocked an attack on my computer with the name Trojan ADH.2. Norton would detect it and block it but apparently ccouldn't remove it. Full system scan didn't do any good.

I'm pretty careful where I go with my laptop as far as websites. If there's something I feel a little risky about a site that has something I want to download, I'll usually download it with my desktop, then later maybe transfer it to my laptop. But the video on my desktop went out about a month ago and I'm still working on that so I've been going to sites I don't normally go to with my laptop.

Well I contacted Norton by live chat and they hooked me up with an agent in India named Gopal I think it was. I talked with him some during the trouble shooting process and he said he finds his work very interesting and loves what he does and he seemed to be pretty sharp. He took over control of my computer and in what turned out to be a lenghty process, found there was a program on my computer called Relevant Knowledge and I watched as he deleted it and went into the registry and deleted certain keys and it looked like all was well. I stopped getting that pop up window.

But I do some gaming once in a while (BF2) and just about every 2 minutes a notice would pop up saying there is a problem with your connection which I'm sure is due to the same Trojan. So I plan on transferring pictures and videos to my desktop when I get it running again, then I'll reformat my laptop to make sure I get rid of it.

But I was curious how I got it to begin with and I found someone who also had it and who had posted they were able to back track it on their computer to when someone had asked him to make a wmv file playable on a PS3 and he was testing some freeware video converters and he apparently went to Leawo Free AVI Converter website where he downloaded the converter. Now one of the windows that had popped up was what looked like a licensing agreement but it included the fact you had to download the program Relevant Knowledge to get the converter.

Now if you're anything like me, when you see one of these long winded agreements, you seldom read them, just click accept and that's how he got it and I'm sure downloading a codec or something of that nature is how I got it. In fact a thread started in this forum today started off with a file from mediafire where I would have to download a codec to listen to it, so I figured I should post a little warning here. Make sure you a least take a glance over of those licensing agreements that pop up before you download them.

Thanks for the heads up Scruff! Yeah I never download extra programs that come with the freeware I download cause they aren't monitored well...

I use Trend Micro. I dumped Norton years ago for the reasons your highlighting in you post Scruffy.

Symantec, Norton in my opinion isn't worth the money they charge. Many of the free anti virus programs available are just as good or better.

In the "off topic" section of the forums, you wonder about "off topics"?

Silly Edcognito.. this topic was originally posted in the Alizée Discussion before being moved here to the offtopic.. hence the response from Aaron about electing new mods.
