I wasn't particularly impressed by the story in general, not because it's a bad story by any means... it's just been done before and redone before.
Dances with Wolves was the first movie with the same general story in my experience (though I'm sure others have come before even this one), and I recognized another obvious copy of the general story in
The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. So the story's not only been done before, but redone many times before.
That being said I still enjoyed the movie, and not only for the visual effects and design. The story, although derivative, did have some additional, more original variations which still made it interesting as it's own retelling in it's own right. But I'm not going to attribute any great originality or greatness to Avatar's story since it is derivative of earlier works.
