I'm 46, and have avoided both my entire life. I'm not Mr. goody goody. I just decided at a young age to not follow those paths. I don't judge those who do, and carry on perfectly fine relations with those who do. It's not hard to stop if you never start.
But I have my vices. I love high fructose corn surup (aka cola), and consume liberally. It doesn't give me a buzz, but it does contribute to the bulge. I also enjoy a goodly amount of lateral and longitudinal G, courtesy of more horsepower than a car should have. And for my final vice, I must confess....I'm 46 years old....and I'm here.....
