It happened that Lurch had to go to some appointment and so Cato was doing double-duty as the Grand-Mere's Butler and Doorman. The Bell rang and Cato answered the door; but the didn't like the guy he saw.
He said I have to see the Madame of the house on urgent business of a debt that must be repaid !
Now, ordinarily, Cato would take him upstairs to the Grand-Mere; however he was getting all the wrong vibes from the man. The man had magnetic, hypnotic eyes and the smile of a shark and a menacing attitude of self-confidence. So Cato told him the Madame was indisposed lately and wasn't seeing anybody !
He said that this was a matter of a loan which had been made to one of the Madam's husbands and his employers were wanting to be repaid !
You will have to leave your Card and a note of the transaction and I will see that the Madame gets them.
The man insolently suggested that he could break the door down to see her ! But Cato said; I Live here, too ! And I am the Madame's Bodyguard and if you break into the House , I will Kill You !
The man contemplated Cato; as if judging his abilities and told him I do this for a Living and have killed 5 men who opposed me ! Then Cato said I Live to Do It ! How many men have you killed; asked the man ? I do not Brag said Cato !
So the man left his card and slip of paper of the loan transaction in the mail slot of the storm door. He told Cato her husband got a loan of 500,000 Francs from us for something and we desire repayment, even if the husband is deceased. I will return in 10 days.
Cato said if the Loan is the truth , then Madame will write you a Check ! But the man said, Oh ! I forgot to say no Checks or Drafts; as we do not like the governments perusal of our affairs ! Madame will have to repay us in Cash !
Later, when Lurch came back, Cato assembled everyone and told them an oriental man who was "menacing" might come to the door, but they were not to let him in as I am sure he is a criminal !
