Gifs work, but currently the maximum size is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller), so not many animated gifs are small enough. Doesn't really bother me though it can be really distracting when everybody is using animated gifs as avatars. You could try using it in your signature instead though.
