In
written French, only those contractions, i.e. before a vowel or a mute h, are correct.
Even though there are A LOT of other contractions in spoken mode, it's just wrong to write them if those cases.
For example "j'ai de la chance" ("I'm lucky") must
always be written that way, while it's
always pronounced "j'ai
d'la chance".
