There used to be just one Virginia. In 1861, Virginia seceded from the U.S. Those living in the Northwest part of the state decided they would lend their allegiance to the U.S., broke off from Virginia, and were accepted into the union as "West Virginia". When the American Civil War ended in 1865, and Virginia was assimilated back into the U.S., West Virginia remained an autonomous state.
So when I say I'm from Virginia, I'm talking about "the" ORIGINAL Virginia....or what was left after the Civil War.
