In fairy tales, the loss of a girl's shoe is associated with the loss of her virginity. Cinderella, for instance, went to the ball and lost her glass slipper. That still leaves the question, how did a shoe become associated with virginity?

The name Virgin, according to Branson (in his autobiography), arose from Tessa Watts, a colleague of his, when they were brainstorming business ideas. In the movie "Love in the Afternoon," Frank, who does not want Arianne go leave, hides her shoe in the pocket of his dressing gown. He embraces her, and Arianne finds the shoe, rapping him teasingly on the head with it before leaving. The shoe, lost, hidden, and then recovered, [in and out] has a double valence: it not only signifies Arianne's new-found sexuality, but also Frank's "lost" heart.
