To have fans, be popular and know you have to work all the time. You can not just take 2 years off and then come back with a sub par product. You have to produce quality material, keep your fans interested. If you dissapear for a year, our fans will find someone else, they will move on to the next idol and you will be just past. Of course, unless you are someone as talented as Freddie Mercury.
