Just like textbooks, novels, poems and other literary matter, song lyrics are copyrighted under US law, with some rights immediately secured without any application paperwork, once the work is "fixed in final form."
Until recently, it has been rather difficult to license the reproduction of large collections of song lyrics, because of the need to contact individual copyright holders.
