When Facebook was created, it was a collegiate networking site, designed for 4-year university students and grad students to connect with others in academia. You couldn't get in without an .edu email address. That lasted a couple years, but then the powers that be decided they wanted to make lots of money, so they opened it up (against much protesting and gnashing of teeth by the members) to anybody.

It's lost the exclusivity, but it retains a sense of being more about the real person than a fake net-identity. Myspace is... well... it's Myspace.
