I think it is sous-entendu that quelque chose du genre "Wow ça fait" comes before ... 20 ans qu'il nous a quitté(s).
Since
nous is a COD (complément d'objet direct) and it precedes the past participle, it should agree.
Nous is plural by nature, so, if I understand correctly, there must be at least
s at the end of
quitté.
The same goes for things like:
1) Je l'ai vue, cette fille.
2) Il m'a regardée. [Speaker is female.]
