Actually, I'm afraid that's not quite true. The common language of the Romance languages and Sanskrit is called "proto-Indo-European." It's a reconstructed language; nobody actually speaks it today. It's believed by linguists that Sanskrit is closer to PIE than any modern tongue.

However, this Indo-European root is shared not only by the Romance languages but also by the Germanic, Slavic, Celtic, and Greek languages, and at that I am probably forgetting a few. So that's not something distinguishing French from English. It's something they have in common.

You're right about the grammer being odd, though. I'm still learning about that and making mistakes.
