Okay, so I just watched The Dark Knight Rises and it was every bit as amazing as I wanted it to be, but I was surprised that there was not even a subtle nod to the Joker.
I completely understand their decision to exclude the character, Heath Ledger's performance was phenomenal and untouchable, that character basically belongs to him in my mind. It would be a huge disrespect to let anyone else try to fill his shoes. But the Joker was a huge force in Gotham, and he drove Harvey Dent into his fall from grace which is mentioned several times.
I hope I don't sound incredibly insensitive or disrespectful for saying that, I have a lot of respect for Nolan as a person and I think it's amazing that he is so careful to protect Heath Ledger's memory and stay respectful to him. I was just a little sad that there was no reference to such an amazing villain and iconic performance.
