Default Ipod question

So my ancient ipod/itunes freaked out on me and I lost all my play counts.. I was at around 6000 plays for JPVA/I'm Not Twenty!

Does anyone know how to restore play count? I didn't hit anything or try to update, I just plugged it into my laptop to start charging it and I noticed the play count was all reset.

Any help would be great!

First off.. what the heck is an xml file, and secondly, would that enable me to recover my play count?

I buy a new iPod every two years to prevent falling victim to obsolescence... I could only dream of reaching something even close to 6000 counts on my ipod before I get a new one.

Are iPods worth it? I've tossed around the idea of buying one, but cannot justify spending $250 on an mp3 player. Are they really superior to other players, or am I just buying a name?
