Default A French Language Milestone

I still can't understand spoken French well enough to grasp the sentences. And I still read on about a fifth grade level. However, I reached a milestone of sorts this past weekend listening to a French song. I actually heard the French words and comprehended them without realizing they were French. In other words, my internal translator didn't translate to English, my brain simply comprehended the French. This is a different feeling than memorizing or knowing French phrases, as I've done with many of Alizée's songs. And considering the comprehension was automatic, I didn't realize what happened until after it happened...and I go..."Whoa.....that was in French.....cool". And the phrase:

"L'univers a ses mystères"

another good one other than rosetta stone (i haven't actually used it but a friend had for mandarin) is Michel Thomas its all audio but you can learn the basics really quick i got the beginners one first ( had a few other programs that weren't any help) then i learned what was one that in a week or so and i had to get the deluxe ten disc pack (the one i would suggest beings it has the beginning pack included in it) may have to order it on amazon now the bookstore i got it at ordered me the last copy they had and i don't know if they producing it any more but amazon had it last time i checked

i guess its more for speaking and understanding than reading for he doesn't use books and doesn't use many spellings

and congratulations ogre i don't understand a whole lot yet (haven't studied my french in 4-5 months and i only started a couple before that may have to bust it out again because i do like it)

Too late Ogre, the French have finally given up on......French.

The Eurovision Song Contest is the greatest cultural event around, and has been for centuries. World War One stated because of it. Communisium collapsed because the USSR wasn't allowed to take part.

It means everything to us Europeans, especially the Brits.

But congrats on your milestone!

I'd say that it's more about French talent than French words, but what do I know?

What irony, considering my milestone came when listening to a song with both French and English lyrics. In fact, I believe the interspersed English is what short circuited by translator nuerons. The preceding passage was in English so my brain wasn't in translator mode when the "L'univers a ses mystères" was processed.

Of course, in the case of Eurovision, I don't think it's the language...it's the artist. If France wants to capture the world with their language, they just gotta find the right artist.
