Maybe moving to Germany...need some info
Hey everyone! For a lonmg time France was top of my list, but lately I have become far more interested in Germany. My family has a ton of German heritage and I would like to sorta get back to my roots so to say. I am highly interested in the language, and would love to do an immersion thing at the very least. What I need tho is a website or a couple that can tell me about the country. I would love to find a website by an American expat who has lived there and experienced the country from an American point of view, and what it was like to experience the country and integrate into the culture. I find a site like this back last summer, but now I can't find it. If anyone could help me out, and give me some links to sites about the language and the country it would be greatly appreciated.

The Goethe Institut is for Germany what "Alliance Française" is for France. Have a look there :

Also, how long do you think it would take an english speaker to be proficient in German? I am good with languages and pick them up pretty well. And, thank you very much for that link that seems like an awesome site. And your willingness to help. Last edited by Tye; 05-17-2008 at 09:11 PM.. |

As for learning german: I think it's a more difficult language than french, as has been already said. The grammar is complicated. As a native speaker I don't notice it of course but when you think about it you realize that english is much more regular and more simplified. So I don't know how long it would take you to learn the language. I guess it all depends on how much time you would put into it. But it's doable of course. |

To parrot gc, German is a more difficult language than French. I took German in high school, and while I aced exams and what have you, I didn't really pick up the language at all, while I'm picking up French significantly easier.
Germany is an interesting country though. Good soccer, beautiful countrysides and old architecture, and I have a, er, "thing" for BMWs.
