Default Has anybody worked with Subrip?

HRO87 and I have been looking for a solution to rip subtitles from files that already have them "burned in", like some of the interviews here on AAm. Poking around, the one application I keep seeing mentioned everywhere is Subrip, which looks to do exactly what we want...but only with DVDs and AVI files, from what I can understand.

Has anybody here worked with it at all, and would you mind giving us some pointers? Does it work with other file formats, or would you need to re-encode first? (Not a big deal, since we're not worried about it being data-lossy...all we're really concerned with is grabbing the subtitle text...but kind of a pain in the butt that we'd like to avoid, if possible. )

Much obliged to anybody who responds!

Which videos do you want to use it with specifically? Because pretty much everything here on AAm originates from srt files that I can dig up for you.

Uh...to be honest, I'm not sure. HRO pointed me to this one specifically, but I think it was just an example of what she generally wanted to do.

(It's really more her project, I'm just trying to tech-nerd my way to a solution. Because I'm a geek that way. )

Ah well that one is especially easy because newer files actually display the subs in realtime, they're not burned in (pretty neat, huh? ):

Older videos do have them burned, but they still started life as SRTs. So HRO should just let me know what she wants and it won't be a problem!

OMG I feel a bit embarrassed that Ruroshen have create an own thread for my question... and I don't really know much about this technical stuff... I mean that Subrip thingy looks difficult to me... isn't it possible to create a srt-file out of the translations Ben posted or something like that if this program wouldn't work? I saw some others here too.. I hope I don't confuse you guys (too be honest I'm confusing myself)... and er... thanks...
