Did you know your cellphone can now read signs and automatically load associated Web pages?

As wireless broadband access by cellphone becomes more common in the US, it is useful if your cellphone can look at signs and labels to automatically load the Web pages whose addresses they cite. This is extremely common in Japan, which widely uses a type of two-dimensional barcode called a QR code. Most current Japanese mobile phones can read this code with their camera.

Some US cellphones can read this code as well, and for many others you can download a low-cost app which enables such functionality.

In an attempt to popularize QR codes in the US, recently Google sent out 100,000 free decals to firms which participate in its free Local Business Center program, which places a hotlink with firm details on Google Maps. You may have seen some of these by now.

Even without such an app, you can use your cellphone camera and Web access to decode such QR codes. Just snap a photo of it and upload the image using the free Web-based decoder at http://zxing.org/w/decode.jspx

You can also generate such QR codes for use on paper handouts, signs and even teeshirts. Find a free Web-based tool at: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/
