I've driven in Paris before in the early 2000's when I was stationed in Italy. It wasn't that bad. As a matter of fact, when I got lost, one young lady stopped her car, asked me where I was trying to go and then told me to follow her all the way to the autostrada (highway). Back then, I was driving a car with an AFI (Armed Forces Italy) plate number so it was easy to tell that I wasn't from the area. Even the police were nice too. When I made a wrong turn, they didn't try to harass me. They politely explained to me what I did wrong and gave me my license back.
The same can be said about the waiters, salespeople and others. I think they all fully understand that tourism is a big part of their economy. So I couldn't really understand where they got that "French are rude" thing. May be if you are arrogant and obnoxious towards them, then you'd be treated rudely -which is true wherever you go.

Good answer & thanks. When I used to work in San Francisco, I had the same attitude. It's the hilliest city in America, maybe in the world, the streets are narrow and twisty, and parking is a complete nightmare. I would always ride the BART train into town and get around on foot or by bus after that.
