finished "Revolutionary Road" (Richard Yates) today... well it was okay but not a book I would read twice...

Very good read, I was able to relate to the detachment from self and unwillingness to embrace femininity/feminine roles. A woman is a very normal, boring, functioning member of society; her equally boring boyfriend proposes to her. She agrees but becomes increasingly dismissive and disinterested in the wedding plans, as well as her daily life. She soon finds herself humanizing and feeling sympathy for food; this causes her to refuse to eat. As she becomes increasingly detached from reality and her own body, she realizes that society, and her fiancee, are metaphorically "devouring" her.

Few weeks ago I finished Frankenstein.
- I'm satisfied in that I now know the true story, and that I can now laugh at the green skin and lightning... but quite honestly I didn't care for the story. In its universe, the novel was written by some sailor trying to sail to the North Pole, who picks up Frankenstein floating on an iceberg or something... and the sailor proceeds to then memorize and write down verbatim the life story that Frankenstein just randomly dishes out to some random English sailors. And to add, I find it odd that he forgets to mention his love and his family... but he remembers word for word the Creature's entire monologue? And not only just his monologue, but the Creature's life story as well? The book really is about the Creature's experiences, not Frankenstein's or anyone elses... So essentially we have a book that was written by an English sailor who wrote down verbatim the life story of a random Swiss guy which really is largely absent because he spends most of the time explaining again verbatim the life story of the Creature... The book just reads like an 18 year old girl wrote it on a dare. --------- Just finished My Ishmael. I agree with most of the points made, but really you have to read it for yourself because everyone will receive something different out of it (which is actually such a significant plot point that it itself was the entire reason for the sequel for having being written)
