Eye rolls and nose scrunches can't really be compared directly. Eye rolls are what you might do to communicate non-verbally about something dumb or strange, like when you are a teen and you eye roll everything your parents say. The eye roll in En Concert tied into the lyrics she was singing. Same with the shoulder shrug.

There is really no pattern with the nose scrunch. One performance she is full of them, then another, same song, only a few. Interestingly, I don't ever recall seeing a nose scrunch in any performance of JEAM. Of all her dances, JEAM is the most difficult by a big margin. She is not just up there wiggling her hips. Then add singing (or lip syncing), and she needs to be deep in concentration. There probably wasn't the thought of her needing to work a nose scrunch or two into the performance. I think it is an extension of her personality that just naturally comes out when she is in the right frame of mind.

Edit:

I agree, we tend to do that here. Alizee is serious business

Your 'no pattern' observation is a good one. But still, I think that the nose scrunch is a kind of non-verbal communication. I'll have to give it more thought.

I think you're right about JEAM. I believe the same is true for JPVA???

Oh yeah... JPVA. Very good point. Another dance that I would rank up there as difficult as JEAM and I haven't seen her do it for that one as well.

Maybe we are onto something, I just don't know what it is yet.

I wonder what a psychologist would make of Alizee's nose scrunch.

I think her nose scrunch resembles a look of disgust:

But she often smiles when she does it:

We need to find a university psychologist whose field of research is facial expressions, and ask them what they think of Alizee's nose scrunch.

Currently, I'm thinking that Alizee's nose scrunch is, technically speaking, a look of "pretend disgust".

Its a sort of non-verbal sarcasm. She's expressing delight by feigning disgust. Its a wink-wink nudge-nudge, a "dog-whistle".

Something like that...

But yes... the facial expression itself is one of "pretend disgust".

How does that sound?
