it is not necessary to reinstall windows or restore the previous restore point.
the first thing for not detecting the USB drivers is that 1. You should have windows service pack 2 (SP2) to retrieve the usb files. 2. the usb device that you are using should have a proper CD software to detect the drivers. 3. you've told that the usb in not detecting and it shows unknown device so you do one thing go to system properties ----> hardware -----> device manager------> pop down the usb serial bus controllers----> right click the standard enhanced pci to usb host controller and disable it. 4. the usb device will detect. if its not detected try removing the usb device and plug it once again!

did you complete uninstall the usb controller and restart your pc to allow windows to try and redetect it

you could try and do a find on the USB port that your computer has making sure that there is still a connection there
