Cream wasn't superbly long-lived, but my god their influence was, I can say, amazing. I discovered them later in my life but they quickly became my favorite band. Mostly because they're a "power-trio" and each band member's instrumentation and improvisation skills were able to be heard individually as a driving force. Not like some modern stuff where you almost never hear the bass or the drums are just a pre-recorded track. As for Alizée, I hope she does some collaborations with some famous people as well. Timbaland, although i'm not in favor of some of his stuff, I must agree might work well with Lily's musical style. The last thing I would expect is for her to do some collaboration with Tony Iommi or whatnot, but I would pay to see/hear that. I'm a multi-instrumentalist, with any luck, she'll 'discover' me when I go to France later on in the year (and use me for say, her next album).

I swear, Alizee's music got me into so many more different types. Kinda cool listening to stuff other than rap 24/7. Anyway, this girl reminded me of Alizee for some reason.

Same here, Alizée opened me to more possibilities in musical exploration.
Before I was just based on the 60s Psychedelia and Blues-rock scene. I still am, but now i've branched to other stuff. The heavier pulse of Thrash and Speed Metal. The cooling sensation of Progressive Rock/Pop. ETC.

A couple of the most influential rock bands you might not have heard of:
First up is Joy Division. This band was only around for a few years, because the lead vocalist Ian Curtis committed suicide shortly before their second album, Closer, was released. Their lyrics are very dark, and use of instruments unique. They're known for their innovative use of synth and bass leads, as well as Curtis's unique voice and lyrics (which, as can be seen in Closer, could often be considered about himself). U2 once stated this band was their biggest influence. Manchester United uses the melody to Love Will Tear Us Apart as one of their cheers, though its rumored that Ian Curtis was a Manchester City fan. Isolation from Closer <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BOdNRGuX9g8&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BOdNRGuX9g8&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Disorder from Unknown Pleasures <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QrzGpVOPcTI&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QrzGpVOPcTI&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> And the other is Sonic Youth, probably the biggest noise rock band. Many modern alternative bands' influences can be traced back to Sonic Youth. They view guitars as tools, and change the timbre and tuning to alter the sound they produce. Silver Rocket from Daydream Nation <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x0AbAMAOUKc&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x0AbAMAOUKc&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Kool Thing from Goo <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0OdSoKfTP1k&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0OdSoKfTP1k&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

If you feel like listening to something different, this is for you. From Mauritius Island : Cassiya.
For the drummers around, the rythm is quite interesting, it's called Sega and is played in Indian Ocean islands (La Réunion, Seychelles and Mauritius). Quite refreshing and even better under coconut trees with a good glass of Rhum... Unfortunately I can only dream of going back down there, while I'm drinking a glass of red wine in my Parisian appartment. Maybe next year... <div><object width="420" height="365"><param name="movie" value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/xrb02&v3=1&related=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/xrb02&v3=1&related=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="365" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always"></embed></object><br /><b><a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrb02_cassiya-iv_music">Cassiya (IV)</a></b><br /><i>envoyé par <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/bahaie">bahaie</a></i></div> |

@Fish
If you don't know Joy Division you don't know about music. "Decades" from the album "Closer" <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NKCctVuZR1g&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NKCctVuZR1g&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> |
