We'd definitely use "principles" in almost any context, though it is true that they mean the same thing. I will make one quick correction to the translation :-) "Dérisoire" should be translated as "derided" rather than "derisive." For a principle to be derisive implies that the principle itself looks down upon others. For it to be derided, on the other hand, is for it to be looked down upon by others. My F/E dictionary actually offers "ridiculous" or "laughable" as translations, but "derided" is, I think, the best.
