Despite the gown, she really was beautiful.

Here is one picture with the veil. The veil makes a big difference, but still the dress as a whole does not fit well. I think I agree with your suspicion that it is a family heirloom and she didn't want to get it altered so it can be passed down again.

I believe she was disappointed with herself for the way she handled her first marriage, running off to Vegas with no family there, so I think she wanted to do it right this time and that included wearing a wedding gown that had been in the family.

I would have loved to have seen her in that wedding dress she wore in Les Enfoires!
