rcs: Yes on both counts, though I'm happy to hang out with her on either.

Myspace isn't dangerous unless you do something silly, but it's still a much more frequent target for unpleasant people than Facebook is.

Facebook always strikes me as much more professional, though, and I definitely prefer it for interacting with my friends.

Better? Most certainly. For a pure social site, Facebook is easier. Myspace might be more customizable, but that isn't always a good thing. Pretty much the only thing myspace has over Facebook, the music, isn't that important. Especially with the new "Fans Of" application.

Safer? About the same, really.

One difference is that Facebook seems to emphasize real names as opposed to the display names of MySpace. The fragile veneer of anonymity that we maintain here will be stripped away.

When Facebook was created, it was a collegiate networking site, designed for 4-year university students and grad students to connect with others in academia. You couldn't get in without an .edu email address. That lasted a couple years, but then the powers that be decided they wanted to make lots of money, so they opened it up (against much protesting and gnashing of teeth by the members) to anybody.

It's lost the exclusivity, but it retains a sense of being more about the real person than a fake net-identity. Myspace is... well... it's Myspace.
