I thought it was mediocre in comparison to Alizee or other huge pop stars' work. I think for me though, it comes down to two things: She's not especially attractive to me and the song is a bit too 'emotional'/whiny for me. I prefer very upbeat 'club thumpers' like MOST Top 40 songs(unfortunately for me, there're always a couple songs more like this on the Top 40). Obviously she looks good but she's not incredibly attractive to me, just not unattractive. As for the type of Pop songs I like refer to: Rebecca Black-Friday, Katy Perry-California Gurls, Rihanna-Disturbia, Lady Gaga-Poker Face. I feel like this song is lacking on the synthesizer melody and that is usually my favorite part of a song(I like melodys.... guitar/keyboard solos are 'music to my ears').
EDIT: Just listened to it again and I have to say... it's grown on me a bit. It now reminds me a bit of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dreams", another song that I hated when it came out but now find pretty catchy. This song is definitely catchy but I feel like it's still missing a truly catchy, simple melody that you can memorize and hum. I feel that's the difference between an alright Pop song and a GREAT or classic one. For a good example, listen to Flo Rida's "Right Round", the synthesizer melody is extremely catchy for me though perhaps not truly simple or singable. At about 1:17 in, the synthesizer plays a melody that it feels like was implied until that point and fits really well for me. Also, maybe I'm just a weirdo but that one 'motif' or 'lick' could sale me on the whole album. For another example, check out Nicki Minaj's "Starships". Though I don't care for Nicki for the most part, she sings a really catchy melody starting at 0:39 or so. The keyboard plays a similar melody in the background and it sounds GREAT to me. When the songs over, if you don't have catchy lyrics and the melody is forgettable.... What will the listener remember? What will be stuck in their head? Yeap, I agree, we all have some different tastes in music. I prefer alot of the slower, more romantic melodies as this one. Even with Alizee, I lover alot of her slower songs such as Tempete. I feel these songs highlight ther voices more cause they dont depend on the music as much, and they tell a clearcut story.
I have following Maddie for more than year now. Actually discovered while searching Alizee. Maddi's first cover song was "Breakeven" and she was just little 10 year old at the time. Her voice is simply amazing. I compare her alot to Alizee because of her voice. I dont judge the "Beauty" aspect as much as some people do, cause for me its all about the Voice and Talent, and less about Age and Beauty. Maddi is very beautiful though. She has come along ways in such a short time. Proud of her. You want to see a performance, watch Maddie sing the song "Rolling in the Deep". Simply amazing.
