"Pictures of Lily" - the hit song & the lesson
In 1967, The Who released the single Pictures of Lily, which climbed into the top five in the UK that year, but is much less known in the United States. The song can be read in a way which allowed its airing during the era in which it debuted, but it does not take too much imagination to also read it in another way - in the spirit of Mylène Farmer.

Today's unexpurgated culture is hardly coy about recognizing such things, as witnessed here and here. The sad climax to the song teaches that one may indeed fall in love with an erotic image that is unattainable for consummation in reality, due to the existence of deceptively realistic art media. In the case of the song, unavailability is on account of mortality. (Yikes, GGGILFism, LOL!) In the potential case of our Lili/Lily/Lilly, Alizée, it is on account of the lack of interest on the part of the love object for such admirers. Enjoy the photos, fellas - that's all you'll ever get. P.S. Pictures of Lily was not the last song which addresses the matter "at hand." For more on this, read the discussion thread concerning the goldfish in Alizée's song J'en Ai Marre!.
