I just feel I should put in a good word for Madonna, though. Just as a lot of people seem to see Alizée perform and pigeonhole her as "sexy French bonbon" without looking deeper, Madonna also is misunderstood a lot. Take the song "Material Girl" for instance. How many people, back when that song came out, took it on a surface level and totally missed the irony? How many people heard the song as calling for a crass, materialistic approach to life (instead of the exact opposite, which was true)? How many feminists got up in arms about the line "'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash is always Mr. Right," and didn't see just how scathing that, and in fact the whole song, was toward women who thought that way? Madonna has always been very sexual in her music, dancing, and performance, usually a lot more blatantly so than Alizée, because that was a part of what she was communicating: sexuality that broke taboos. She has also, very often, been very spiritual. A lot of her music has a religious theme. The song of hers that does the best job of blending those two currents is, in my opinion, "Like a Prayer." And I also consider it the best song she ever wrote. It throbs with both the spirituality of sex, and the sensuality of the spirit. It's incredibly powerful. If you start out with a somewhat puritanical view, Madonna will offend. But if you can get past that, the brilliance and depth become very impressive. I can understand why Alizée would admire Madonna and be a fan of hers. Although Alizée shouldn't pattern herself after Madonna, that isn't saying there's anything WRONG with Madonna, only that they are two very different people and Alizée has her own type of splendor. She shouldn't pattern herself after Madonna for the same reason she shouldn't pattern herself after Mylène. I'm sure she'll never do the one, and will no longer do the other. But Madonna's awesome. Don't diss the High Priestess.
