She should dress in the way that conveys what she wants to convey.
It seems to me the benchmark for a lot of people was the JEAM sailor suit, so I'm going to come out at this point and say I didn't particularly like that outfit, nor the very short skirt she wore for the JPVA dance. To me, while neither of those quite crossed over the line, they were close. That's what happens when Mylène Farmer is handling your wardrobe, I suppose. (In complete fairness, she does the same sort of thing herself when she performs, and for her it works beautifully. And it would for Alizée, too, if that was what she wanted to do; quite obviously, though, it's not.) It's clear, regardless of what Alizée has said in interviews, and regardless of how much genuine gratitude she feels towards Mylène, that she doesn't want to convey either "I'm not going to perform naked but here, this is not too far from it" or "Watch and see if you can peek up under my skirt." The outfits from her old career that she chose herself, most notably the ones she wore to perform ACC, were tasteful and interesting. They were not overwhelmingly sexy, but instead conveyed originality, intelligence, and a sense of color and pattern. For me at least, "sexiness" is rolled all together with the rest of her, the intelligence, kindness, quirkiness, intuition and magic. It doesn't need to be emphasized. It's there, but understated, which seems to be the way she wants it and thus, in my feeling, the way it ought to be. I do think she might consider varying the baby-doll dresses with some outfits that are more form-fitting; this would not automatically recreate the JEAM look -- the clothes she wore to perform ACC, and more recently what she wore (as herself, not as Juliet) for the MJ video, or for the Love Is All performance, were all form-fitting and all looked great. But I wouldn't totally replace the loose drapes. If she were to put her sexuality more up-front in her performances, adopting a hot-to-go persona, she could probably set the stage on fire and attract a bigger (but not better) audience. Sex does sell. I'm sure she knows that, though, and she's said herself that being again as big a star as she was with her first album isn't on her wish list.

So at what point does one cross the line?

That's hard to define exactly. All I can say is that those outfits and dances were saved from it because they were so well done.
The reason I say those two outfits came close is because they were a bit blatant in what they conveyed, which Alizée herself did not convey in her mannerisms. The JEAM dance had some extremely sensuous moves to it, at one point suggesting the pelvic motions of a woman making love, and the JPVA dance combined the very short skirt with those deep bends that popped the skirt up in back to display her ass (from the right angle). Now Mylène herself has been a lot more blatant than that at times, and still managed to pull it off as art. A lot depends on what the artist wants to convey. If Alizée wanted to convey blatant up-front sexuality those moves might be considered tame; since clearly she does not, they send the wrong message.

"The idea was not to be "sexy." The clothes I like, that's all. If you find it sexy, all the better! I don't intend to play that card at any price."
- Alizée, FHM.fr Jan. 2008 I think that says it all.
